Agree but Ohio's had pretty good luck with them under Groce (not so much under TOS). Both Walter Offutt and John Smith are major college transfers. But before those two we had several "can't miss" transfers that were going to turn the program around only to completely flame out (Johnnie Jackson, Marin Bota, etc.). Then you have Armon Bassett who was both a hit and a miss. But you are correct. You are rolling the dice.

Didn't Offutt technically come from Wright St before Ohio? I know he first went to OSU. And Smith was at SLU which I wouldn't consider a major. We had Jason Edwin from there a while back, and I would call that lateral.

If you want to argue semantics fine but both originally committed and played at schools in more highly rated conferences than the MAC. But as I said I agree that transfers are big question marks. The nice thing about Green next year is that if he stinks so what? They still return everybody from a pretty successful team this year.

Really, I wasn't trying to play games with Offutt. You could call him a major school recruit. SLU, I don't think so, I'd still call that lateral, and Smith came in with some legal baggage, so it's a bit different anyway.

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Men’s Basketball has announced the signing of Kadeem Green, a 6-8, 210-pound forward. Green will join the Bobcats for the spring quarter after transferring from Missouri.

Green, a Toronto native, attended United Faith Christian Academy in North Carolina. He then chose to enroll at Missouri over Iowa State, Memphis, Wake Forest and VCU.

Green redshirted during the 2010-11 season and he played in 11 games, averaging 10.5 minutes per contest, this year. During his time with the Tigers, he averaged 3.0 points and 3.1 rebounds, while shooting 71 percent from the floor.

“Kadeem is a long, athletic post player that fits into our system very well and we are excited to have him join our family,” Head Coach John Groce said. “His versatility on both ends of the court will be an extraordinary asset for this team. Having followed him since high school, we are very familiar with ability and progression. He is also an exemplary student-athlete, going above and beyond in the classroom.”

Hmm....interesting to see the John Groce announced this transfer on Saturday right after the Sweet 16 run.

It doesn't indicate to me that Groce is planning to go anywhere because if he was he'd want this guy to come with him.

I guess from the vantage point of where Groce is with his program all that would really be need is a guy that can come in and give 10 quality minutes a game and make the 10 man rotation.

Kadeem isn't going to be starting for the Bobcats over Ivo Baltic or Jon Smith. He's probably looking at taking Tyquane Goard's 7.2 minutes per game to come in for Ohio in special situations.

LaVert may have to redshirt. I'm not sure where the minutes are going to be for him next season.

Here is some info on LaVart:

RE: MAC hooops 2012/2013
Tim Beckman was getting Toledo recruits to commit until the day before he announced he was going to Illinois. If the money is enough, Groce would be nuts not to take the Illinois job. Beckman is essentially set for life even if he has minimal success in the Big Ten. Groce could negotiate that same type of scenario whereby he will never have to worry about his personal finace again. I do not think long term MAC coaches like Charlie Coles and Bobby Nichols have that type of financial security.

Further "proof" of how "good" we expect the Chippewas to be next year is the "bullet-proof" transitive property, indicating Central was better than every hoops team in the NCAA this year!

Of course, all teams this year can make the same claim.

Since there is not a separate scheduling thread, here is ours and have to say overall very pleased with our MAC teams this year, two very attractive teams with Miami and Ohio and EMU is not bad and at least we can feel good beating up on NIU in BB.

Home
Boston College
East Carolina
Miami
Ohio
Eastern Michigan
Elon

Away
Miami (OH)
Northern Illinois
Northeastern
Siena

Thanks OutLawPete and the original source with a much broader article about UMass, DK contract, NIT, etc
full article

Still a few teams to fill it out.

Yeah, a real accomplishment. 03-wink

As long as UMass still shows up on the NIU football schedule, I think the schools will be even at one thumping a piece.
