Unfortunately ISU is the best team in the state, and we are at least a few years behind them.

You never know, next year NIU could be better than ISU. Being the best in the state of Illinois is a not so grand distinction. Have all 13 Illinois schools ever been shut out of the NCAA tourney before this year?

Nobody made it in 2008. Not sure if it happened at any point since then or how many times before (probably not often since the field expanded to 64/68).

I still think we are couple of years away. We have the coach, just need to keep adding talent.

The coach at ISU has put together a decent team. In the NIT they beat Ole Miss on the road, and lost in OT at Stanford. All things considered, they represented themselves well, and they have some solid players returning.

Brutal, especially in light of how much talent the state produces.

The NIT field each year is full of teams who are better than many of the NCAA field. Because of so many conference automatic bids, many schools have to settle for the NIT who would very possibly win a game or two in the NCAA tournament. Some of these "losers" are winning 20 games. And, it is normally very good basketball to watch.
