Notice that I took 6 surrounding states and took 2 teams from each state. You can probably substitute Maryland and Navy for another represented state. I just think it's logical, cuts down on travel for the fans and athletes. It also gives everyone a built in rival.

We've played Memphis almost as many times as Syracuse, WVU, Pitt, Rutgers and UConn combined, so my bias says Memphis is a good fit. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem the rest of the BE sees it that way.

well, if the big east ever needs a school that can put 40k+ in the stands on a regular basis for football, a basketball program that espn seems to really like and is consistantly in the top 15 in attendance, a representative athletic budget and solid "minor" sports, all wrapped up in a major population center centrally located with an excellent airport and tourist amenities - give us a call. if not - ce la vie, good luck to you.

really...Jeb i agree...look at the #'s

Memphis v. UL - 52,500

2003 Memphis v. USF - 47,500

2003 Memphis v. Cincy - 45,300

those are very good numbers...add in 50,000 for Memphis v. WVU and you can see we would be a viable team...now i agree...we might bring 38,000 for a Memphis v. Rutgers game but really...who wouldn't...add in the fact we will be bringing 16-18,400 in basketball to every game at the brand new FedExForum...i think the UofM coaches, admins, and fans are doing a very good job of making Memphis a very attractive program.

Go Tigers!!!

Quote: An interesting scenario would be if the NCAA decided to create 12 conferences with 12 teams each based on geography.
That would assume the NCAA has control over the schools in terms of how they confederate -- but they don't.

If the Big East thought Temple had any value what so ever, they would have kept them. I'm sorry to say this, but put a fork in Temple. They're done.

why would the Big East and Temple break up...just to come back together...i just don't see that happening...besides they are in a big-time downward slide in football and basketball.

Go Tigers!!!

Temple would have been perfect for the Big East. (after all, they WERE in the Big East).

Only one problem: they didn't care enough to do what needed to be done.

If Temple ever shows they can do the things necessary to be competitive, then they can apply. But I don't think anyone will hold their breathes waiting for THAT day.

Replace Temple with East Carolina and I'll take it. Say what you want about ECU, but they're at least trying. Their football program has fallen on hard times but they at least have succeeded in the past, and would do something with the BCS money. As for basketball, we don't need a strong basketball program, so anything ECU gives us in that would be a bonus. And I like Herrion, with a solid conference and healthy players ECU can be a NIT squad.

-- Exactly....It seems from what the Temple AD said in the article that was posted in this board a few weeks ago...Temple still has its eye on being the 9th school in the all sports league....Temple football is horrible...but the Owls do have their advantages....their geography is perfect and don't forget the Philly market...a market the BE football schools will lose when Villanova and the catholic schools go their own way

-- If Temple football shows any kind of life in the next few yrs.....I wouldn't mind seeing them come back...but their football as to improve

The problem is, when it comes to college football, people in Philly care more about Penn State and Notre Dame than they ever will about Temple.

-- That's true....but when looking at the future all sports conference....basically we are going to have an eastern league without teams in NYC, Boston and maybe Philly.....not having teams in those markets frankly isn't gong to help the new league with its TV contract etc

-- Their is also the issue of where the conference tourney is going to be....I'm sure the catholic schools are going to keep MSG....but where are the football schools going to have theirs? With the size of the bball fan bases in the future league it is probably going to have to be at a NBA arena....but again...none of the BE football schools have an NBA team in their cities....

-- Like I said before....if Temple football improves at all....I could see the BE football schools taking them back just for the market they bring....if not.....it may make some sense to look into the Fordam idea if the Big Apple bowl gets built and Fordham wants to make the jump

Here's an article on Temple, as it considers it's options:

<a href='http://premium.si.cnn.com/2004/football/ncaa/11/16/bc.fbc.temple.future.ap/index.html' target='_blank'>http://premium.si.cnn.com/2004/football/nc...e.ap/index.html</a>
