Until we get better I don't think I want to see that matchup either. It'd be like playing Purdue.

Something tells me MD's reason for not wanting a game against MSU isn't about getting a beat down from a consistently high end program.

He thinks MM won't try as hard to win a game vs. MSU as he would vs. UNC or Kansas or etc.
Personally, I think that is a ridiculous thought.
MM has always been a competitor (given that he played for MSU) and has to still be one to be in that career. I think he would try really hard to beat MSU. Granted, we aren't at that level yet (see vs. a good Purdue team last year). But, someday soon I hope it happens.

It is just a huge huge conflict of interest. I didnt realize that Coach Montgomery was still so dedicated to MSU. I just dont want to see the game because it would be awkard as hell. I think Coach Montgomery is a great coach, but I dont think it would be smart to schedule MSU.

You seriously think MM wouldn't do everything he could to win against MSU?

You're telling me, if you were coach of SIU Edwardsville and had a game with NIU you wouldn't be out to see the guys you know and work with every day beat NIU?

I can see wanting to avoid MSU because of risk of an unholy beatdown. I can even see wanting to avoid matchups against a coach's mentor because the coach might press too hard, get out of his game because he's wanting too badly to prove himself, where the game means too much to him. But your scenario makes the least sense.

Its not a case of intentionally throwing a game, its just the moment becomes too big for those involved. It is like this: Lets say you are a musician starting out and just got your own band and have a gig at a really nice bar. You are ready to go and then you find out you are the opening act for your favorite childhoold band. You are not going to perform the same way, your mind wanders elsewhere. We saw this vs Wisconsin in football.

NO! NO! NO! Again I say NO!
If anything, as a competitor, your juices are flowing even more and you want to perform even better. We did not see this in the game vs. Wisconsin. I think we saw a really good, bigger and better team beat a smaller, not as good NIU team who maybe didn't play as well as they could have, but it wasn't because their coach was previously an assistant at UW. If you ever played competitive sports, I don't know how you could say these things. If you didn't play competitively, then trust others who say that a competitor like MM would be able to focus on what he needed to do and in fact might even raise his level for a game like that. Just like a musician might raise his level of performance in that opening act.

Wisconsin was better no doubt. But they are not 42 points better than NIU, no way, no how.

I agree. But the difference wasn't because DD was thinking about his former boss and school. That is INSANE! It is because Wisc was quite a bit better and because NIU did not perform well. It happens. A lot. And when there is a big difference between quality of teams things can snowball and spiral in a bad direction pretty easily. All without ANYTHING to do with feelings by one head coach towards another.....
