Members of the University of Southern Mississippi band chanted racist taunts at a hispanic Kansas State player during the schools' NCAA tournament game on Thursday. After point guard Angel Rodriguez was fouled late in the first half of the second-round game, a few band members showered the freshman with cries of "where's your green card?"

The funny thing is, Mr. Rodriguez was born in Puerto Rico meaning that he was born a U.S. citizen and has no need for a green card.

Awww....way to fight back against national stereotypes of Southerners, USM band!

This same story thread was put on the OT board yesterday.

We all have our knuckle heads but they always seemed to ave some real doozies. Anyone remember Eagleinyune from the cusa days?

Eagleinyune still posts on our Rivals board as "Legendary Eagle". LOL

As for the chant, it was obviously classless (and ignorant) but only 3 or 4 chanted it and it was quickly stopped by another band member.

Not too big of a deal, IMO but is sad that 3 or 4 students doing something stupid give an entire university a bad name..

I’m all for taunting, but it needs to be clever, researched, and well thought out.

Acceptable subjects for taunts:
GPA…. yes
SAT Scores…. yes
A schools admission standards…… yes
Broke up with your girlfriend…… yes
Players a team recruited but couldn’t sign….. yes
Caught cheating….. yes
Race, ethnicity, and religion……. No, never, not under any circumstances, always unacceptable.

This was neither creative nor clever, and it’s sad when a few people give an entire university a bad name, but in today’s 24 hours news and media access it’s going to happen.

As I said students will say dumb things that will be unfortunately tied back by other fans and spectators to your school. I know for a fact tht we had quite a few idiotic fans at the Birmingham game that gave our school a Black eye from other observers. The thing that made this incident worse for USM was that it was by individuals officially representing te school.

I think it was in poor taste...but I think the post-chant ridicule has gone overboard. I think it was far worse when the Duke fans chanted "Crack Baby" at DJ Strawberry.
