OT: CMU fires Zeigler
Per Jeremy Guy's twitter. Wonder if that means Trey transfers...

Wow, although I can't say I'm surprised.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that Zeigler will get an assistants job and Trey will transfer to that school.

This shows that college sports can be a crap shoot.

UofD-Mercy did very well with Ray and Ray Jr.

CMU did poorly with Earnie and Trey.

Got to believe that the CMU program is completely headed to the tank.

and it could get worse. One of their other top players, McBroom, may also leave. That is two of the top three scorers.

And as anyone not living in a 'moon colony' knows, take two tops players from CMU and that is one bad team.

Total rebuild job.

RE: OT: CMU fires Zeigler
Here is a thread about the firing (CMU site).

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=340&f=2794&t=8805426

Some very early SPECULATION about Trey.

Can NOT transfer inside the MAC so let's dismiss that thought...

UofD? UofM? How about he and his junior cousin, Bo, going somewhere as a package (and damn good package) deal?

IF UofD could free a coaching slot for Earnie they just could try to get both Trey and Bo to go with Ray Jr.

I think you're right in that Trey will go wherever Ernie is (if?) hired as an assistant. Michigan wouldn't shock me...Neither would UCLA. Ernie was an assistant under Howland at both Pitt and UCLA before going to CMU. Maybe Howland takes him back to get Trey, who he recruited heavily.

Obviously that's all speculation, but this could get interesting.

RE: OT: CMU fires Zeigler
Michigan is very doubtful. I read that they do not have any scholly's left for 2012...and they have overcommitted for 2013 by 3 players. In short, they need to remove players from the program, not add more in the next two years. Interesting stuff in Ann Arbor.

I don't see MSU being a good fit. Izzo doesn't go after transfers very much, if at all. The Valpo situation with Wood was completely different.

I'm guessing its a package deal with dad. UCLA might be too volatile. Howland is there for at least next year, but the situation has gone down hill. If he doesn't win this year, he might be gone.

Interesting that McBroom is from Cali and not coming back either. With a weak Pac12, I bet he and Trey can catch on somewhere together, and EZ as an assistant.

Think U of Detroit. My money is on them picking up the Z's

Although, IMO McBroom cannot play anywhere above the MAC in bball. Accolades this year aside, he was completely overhyped.

I disagree a little there. Getting talent has never been the problem at CMU, it's getting a good coach, although they've had some good coaches too (Coles, Dambrot, Jay Smith). Ziegler was an unmittigated coaching disaster, CMU should be fine with the right coach.

You are right, BUT CMU will become the next NIU and UT which got new coaches but the 'cupboard was bare' and had to rebuild from ground zero.

wow, i'm surprised they fired him while Trey is still there. that took guts. i'm impressed. i would have done the same. the team has been bad under Ziegler.

i can't see MacCallum (sp?) and Ziegler playing side-by-side, but stranger things have happened.

This is from the main BBS.

http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=561169

A prediction that CMU could lose Trey, McBroom and Derek Jackson, CMU's top 3 scorers.

If Murphy is building a nice program in Ypsilanti, then the program in Mt. Pleasant is imploding.

Wow. Its probably good for CMU in the long run, but a complete rebuild like this will mean some ugly basketball for at least a year or two.

Going a bit off topic, but it looks like the MAC West will be even worse next year. Toledo should be the favorites, and we should be solid with the transfers and Ray Lee coming in. After that, it gets kinda ugly. WMU loses quite a bit, Ball State has to move on without Jarrod Jones, NIU may still be a year away from being a competitor, and CMU has blown it up. Yucky.

No matter what happens, I just want to see the MAC strong again. Hopefully we can back to a 2 bid conference, I believe one year during the Braun/Boykins/Dial days we had 3 NCAA bids, EMU, WMU, Miami. This year was not good, but I think we can get back to national relevance. OFFTOPIC but Go Ohio, beat Michigan, Pleeeeeeaaaaaase! The MAC needs this one bad.

Well first of all its was the right decision by CMU Ernie Z as a coach has been a joke, I think his son would have developed more under a different coach and improved. Ernie Z outrecruited EMU but it never showed on the court.

I'd wait to see who CMU will bring in to clean up the mess and pick up the pieces.

Anyone have any thoughts?

PS Hawkins may be gone next year at WMU

Hawkins is in a funny situation. it seems like the fanbase is split on him. he recruits well, but it hasn't always translated into good teams.

If the MAC is to get two bids, EMU will most likely have to be one of them.

I see it unlikely that two bids could come from the East as they would beat up on each other.

The 'best case' scenario would be for Murphy to build a strong program and run away from the rest of the west.

So where does this put John Simon the talented 6'8 forward out of Cadillac who signed with CMU in the early period? Does he get to walk due to the coaching change?

Dear Friends,
The buyout for Ziegler was just under $370,000. How might that affect who they may be able to hire? Remember, Ramsey's was $200,000 less. Couldn't have happened to a better school. (the buyout)

Here is an article by David Goricki, Detroit News.

He tosses out a lot of names including some who were candidates for Murphy's position:

Boylan, Lichlighter, etc. Dane Fife's name was dropped.

http://blogs.detroitnews.com/collegespor...rett-reed/

What I also found fascinating is the reference to Trey and his childhood friend, Austin McBroom. Yep, it appears that are a package deal waiting to happen.

What a package deal: dad as an ass't coach + Trey + Austin McBroom.

Curious if they will stay in the midwest or go back to California?

CMU next year might rival the '2011/'12 NIU team for lack of talent.

This program hasn't hit bottom yet.
