Cronin: ‘We’re not talking about the fight’
Cronin: ‘We’re not talking about the fight’
03/13/12 at 1:17pm by bkoch

Those writers who show up in Nashville on Thursday for UC’s interview session looking for some juicy quotes about the Crosstown Shootout brawl are likely to walk away empty-handed.

“I can tell you right now we’re not going to talk about it,” Mick Cronin said today. “We’re going to talk about our team and talk about Texas and our season.”

Not only will there be no discussion about the fight itself, Cronin said, there will be no discussion about how the fight changed the Bearcats’ season.

“It’s not an issue,” Cronin said. “It’s the most overrated concept in maybe the history of UC athletics. Seriously, it really is. But everybody loves sensationalism. Just watch the presidential debates.”

Any writers looking to explore that angle, Cronin said, “are going to be disappointed because they’re not going to get their story line because it’s not the story line.”

He asked him about the national media looking to talk about the fight...

And then Koch wrote this,

"The situation wasn’t that clear-cut when the Bearcats awoke on the morning of Dec. 11, the day after the fight that took place in the waning moments of their 76-53 loss at Xavier. They were 5-3 at that point, had just been blown out by their crosstown rival, and were about to be hit with suspensions to key players for their roles in the conflict.?

Mick knows Koch will be down in Nashville asking about the fight.
Koch is a jerk ****.

I caught what I think was about all of the interview Cronin did today on Jim Rome's radio show (Huggs was apparently on right before him) and was surprised that The Fight didn't come up. Wonder if Cronin told them before he went on that it's been overplayed and he doesn't want to discuss it.

I haven't heard his show in a long time, but Rome always struck me as a guy who gets it. He may have said something before or after the interview on the air concerning the fight, but his interviews with coaches were always about the team and the games. Even when Huggs was going through his stuff, Rome never brought it up.

When Bill did the interview with Yancy, I noticed there were four or five questions (out of about 20 total) pertaining to the fight.

Agreed. Unless Rome is talking to "Chris" Everett

RE: Cronin: ‘We’re not talking about the fight’
Good for Mick. They discussed the fight in nearly every pre-game in the BE tourney and then asked about it afterwards. Enough is enough. And I don't think Bill Koch asks about it because he's really interested or obsessed with it. I think he goes to it out of sheer intellectual laziness. Its the easy thing to ask about and to go to in talking about the great run they've made in BE play. Going beyond the stupid fight would require in-depth analysis and looking at super complicated things, like the growth of players over the course of a season, seniors who want to go out on a high note, a coach who gets the Xs and Os right against conference foes. Way too complicated there. Much much easier to just say, "Hey, what did the fight do to help you turn it around? Hey Yancy, you felt bad after that fight right? But now you feel good that its over and you've moved on."
