Eric Holder shoots down Picture ID law for voting. Chicago politics on a national scale. What's next, let those in prison vote, let dead people cast an absentee ballot? 03-lmfao03-weeping03-weeping

Quote:Texas follows South Carolina as the second state in recent months to become embroiled in a court battle with the Justice Department over new photo ID requirements for voters.

Photo ID laws have become a point of contention in the 2012 elections. Liberal groups have said the requirements are the product of Republican-controlled state governments and are aimed at disenfranchising people who tend to vote Democratic — African-Americans, Hispanics, people of low-income and college students.

Proponents of such legislation say the measures are aimed at combating voter fraud. But advocacy groups for minorities and the poor dispute that and argue there is no evidence of significant voter fraud.

Being admitted to the hospital is a pretty basic right, so is getting a marriage license, purchasing a firearm is in the constitution.

I don't see what the big deal is to show I.D. when voting.... It would immediately stop voter fraud.

The firearm is the only basic right that comes close, and the id is a regulatory one to PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM VIOLENCE which the NRA opposes BTW.

If you want to debate the other two as being basic rights, then step right in......

It's almost as hard to get a pictured ID as it is to buy a condom at Walgreens. You drive/take the bus to the Sec. of State. Ask for a pictured ID, they give you one.

THAT'S JUST TOO MUCH TO ASK!!!!!!!!! 03-hissyfit03-hissyfit

I supposed the next step is to require absentee ballots to be notarized?

Absentee ballots are sent to registered addresses. No need for notaries.

Citizens of this country are allowed to vote. Non-citizens are not. How do you suggest we tackle the potential problem of non-citizens voting if not requiring ID's? I'm open to any realistic idea.

Really? And only that registered person at the address gets the mail, opens it, and could send in the ballot? You serious?

Is that the problem this is out to solve? Have you ever voted in a state that doesn't require ID's? You might have a point, what if we had this in Florida in 2000? A LOT of problems would have never happened.

...and yes, that is one of the problems this is trying to solve. That, and trying to stop dead people from voting, people voting in multiple districts, etc...

Again, I'm open to ideas. Is there another way of verification?

What's the magnitude of this problem? How does people voting in multiple districts get solved by an id? How do dead people vote today?

Also, why pick that off and not address the absentee ballot issue?

I was being sarcastic, get it? ID's won't solve anything but add more government to the process and limit people's ability to vote, which the right seems to want to do to ensure they stay in power.

Demanding picture ID in order to vote is a solution in search of a problem. There has been no demonstrated reason for it.

Don't the Republicans have a lot of JOBS bills that they promised to get moving on?

The republican-led House has passed over 30 jobs bills that are sitting in the Senate.

I don't know if they are any good, but they are passing jobs bills.

Common Sense.
Voting is a basic right that comes with, IMO, a higher threshold of responsibility. If the desire is to exercise that right, take the necessary and simple steps to secure the necessary safeguard to insure that basic right isnt "stolen" (by others perpetrating fraud).

No, it isnt fool proof but it should a minimum requirement.
Voting or the fraud that can be perpetrated is at the root of power in this country. It directs policy, flow of $ and is even a national security issue (IMO).

There are steps, if people are serious to deter false docs.
Considering how divided this country is, taking logical and legal steps to enhance the belief (and actuality) that the election process is fair is not "unfair".

I just don't see what the big deal is to show some I.D.

Pretty much everyone has some anyway, and if they don't it takes literally 5 minutes to get one. It's perhaps the simplest and cheapest method to prevent voter fraud. Some of you act like they want your first born child or something.... Sheesh...

It's not to prevent voter fraud. It's to depress turnout.

Because what seems to happen is that the Republican dominated Wisconsin legislature passes a Voter-ID law, then follows it up by shutting down half of the DMV's in the state and restricts their hours to 9-5 or 10-4 as a "cost saving measure."

Then it becomes "Oh, you need to take a day off of work to get the stupid thing", not "it takes five minutes."

I'd start countering these laws with ones that make Election day a national holiday and allow people to leave their jobs to vote without punishment.

This is the voter fraud that needs to be caught and punished.

And frankly, the idea that there's some illegal Mexican is going to come in and mispronounce your name and get to vote while you get rejected 5 hours later when showing up is dumb.

It's easily the worst way to try to "steal" an election. It's an issue of scale. Even local elections have thousands of votes, state legislature in Michigan is 20-40,000 and so on up the ladder. Every person that goes in there to defraud their vote is a person that could get caught by saying something stupid, by someone who knows the person they're "voting for", knows that person died in the last two years, that person shows up later in the day and screams bloody murder (and usually gets a temporary ballot that will end up getting the other one thrown out), or the area is out in the boonies like where my best friend lives where within a year of moving there, the lady at the election knew which house was his because of his dogs.

Any kind of realistic fraud will occur during the counting stage, or like the above mentioned moron, will involve some guy creating absentee ballots out of thin air.

So now that you've selectively decided voting shouldn't require a pictured ID, as it's just toooooo hard to take the time to get one.

Which of these SHOULD continue to require a pictured ID?
Let's start with check cashing, and apply your logic to that one. Every Tuesday you'll find 25% of the convictions in the paper are for passing bogus checks. 03-shhhh
