It must be so bad that the BE keeps thank Nova for (what sounds like) letting Temple in.
Its ugly. Villanova is only 12 miles from Temples campus, and Nova has a long history of acting in a selfish way. They are largely responsible for destroying the Philly Big 5 (Temple, St. Joes, Nova, Penn, LaSalle), back in the 80s when BE was in its infancy.
They became very protective of keeping Temple out of BE, especially in bball. Many think the parnoia is unfounded as they usually dont recruit the same player.
Once Nova gets over itself, this has a chance of being an even bigger (nationally) rivalry, than it is now.
Now that you're a big east school, would you support us adding St. Joes? Ask UCF if they think we should add FAU. Or if Louisville wants Western Kentucky. You never want a competitor, even a weaker one, to move in right next to you.

It's not just that. It's the way Villanova went about it. All reports point to them going on drawn out rants on teleconferences at least twice dissing Temple and saying why we would be a terrible addition. Then there's the PR stunt that Nova pulled at OUR presser.
I'd also like to add that Villanova is pompous upper-middle class/located in an affluent suburb. Temple is the "people's" university located in a rough city neighborhood. They represent entirely different values and demographics, which as you can imagine, clash.

I think it is fair to say....that most of us in the Big East....know the talking points on both sides.
Both arguments are valid and yes....over time....things usually get nasty. I think though....we can all be adult and move forward and hope the best for both programs.

Yes, I would support St. Joes. In fact, Temple actively endorsed LaSalle into the A10 in years past.
Bottomline: You either crave competition, or you run from it.

RE: VIDEO, Temple news conference, good news about Western school added
This is a silly argument. It makes sense to have two schools from a similar area in one conference. But three serves no purpose. Villanova's blocking of Temple needlessly hurt the conference when the rivalry could have made a lot of money for both the two schools and the Big East.
Interestingly, even though three schools from the same area being in the same conference doesn't really add much, John Chaney still pushed for LaSalle to join the A-10 after the MCC (Horizon League) nearly fell apart in the '90s because he knew it was good for Philadelphia hoops.
There is now more clarity on the Philadelphia basketball scene with Temple and Villanova in the Big East, St. Joseph's and LaSalle in the A-10, Penn in the Ivy League, and Drexel in the CAA. I certainly hope UConn will welcome a rivalry with UMass if Louisville ever leaves the league.

Villanova looks down at Temple as if it were something that needs to be scraped off of a shoe. That attitude is very common amongst the BE Catholics towards the BE state schools.
By keeping Temple out Nova has been protecting its own interests. After all, Nova had the Philly BE market cornered for thirty years. The problem is that Nova has put its own interests ahead of the good of the conference. It has been able to exploit the multiple agendas of the factions that make up the BE to keep Temple out. But by doing so, it has also contributed to the near destruction of the conference. Had Nova truly championed the Temple cause, the Owls would have been the tenth team coming in right after TCU. Maybe then we wouldn't have had all of the drama of the past twelve months.
Exactly... And they would have quietly stepped into the background, instead of trying to shift the narrative of Temple's press conference to further their agenda...
Anyone that doesn't think Villanova has it bad for Temple simply doesn't have a clue.
