Out-Of-Conference Rivals
Just curious, who is everybody's out-of-conference rivalry?

For Miami it is Cincinnati
Ohio plays Marshall every year.
Buffalo / UConn ? do they play every year or just lately or what?
Ball State / Indiana?

Would be nice to see NIU play Northwestern every year at Soldier Field to really get all of Chicago involved.

Toledo/Purdue ?

Seems like the Michigan schools are always trading off playing Michigan State and Michigan similar to the Ohio schools playing Ohio State.

Who would UMass play consistent out-of-conference? Boston College?

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
I guess in football Purdue is the team we've played the most out of conference recently but it's not a rivalry. I think the series is 3-3 too... anyways for us there are no rivarly's out of conference, IMO.

on NCAA 2k5 BG's rivals were Toledo and Cleveland State in basketball.

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
In basketball Duquense was traditionally on the schedule.

Ohio usually has either Kentucky or Louisville on the schedule. In the 1964 tourney Ohio beat both schools in the same bracket.

West Virginia has infrequently been on the Ohio schedule and may become a yearly thing once again.

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
FOOTBALL - Toledo really does not have an out of conference rival. In the last 15 years they have had two separate series with Purdue and have a 2nd series upcoming with Iowa State and Navy very soon. But none of them have any sense of a rivalry.

BASKETBALL - Again, really nobody.

Look for WVU to schedule an opening season football game with OU in Morgantown very soon and a basketball game in early December in Morgantown in the near future. WVU is also talking about giving a basketball game to Akron in early December at Morgantown. This information is from the AD of WVU at a recent meeting he had in Charleston with major WVU donors . It will be a great experience for the MAC school's players to get to play a Big 12 program!

Depends on the sport.

Basketball, it's probably Cleveland State. Nobody in football. OSU and Indiana in soccer.

Football: We don't really have an OOC rival although we have beaten IEWE twice in a row. There were some pretty 'chippy' games with WKU but that is over with.

Basketball: Both Butler and Indiana State

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
Ohio all time basketball and football games (OOC rivals):

Basketball
Marshall 93
Cincinnati 77
Ohio State 21
West Virginia 15
Kentucky 15
Louisville 12

Football
Marshall 55
Cincinnati 50
West Virginia 17
Ohio State 7
Kentucky 5
Louisville 4

-At the FBS level primarily Kentucky and West Virginia schools are considered rivals with future games planned for Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall and West Virginia.

-Cincinnati was a big rival for the Bobcats up until the early 80's but we've stopped playing them in football all together and rarely play them in basketball.

-Ohio doesn't play Ohio State very often anymore. Its been over a decade since the two schools have played in basketball.

UB has none in football. The other sports where we have common programs, it's the other Big 4 members. We play Canisius and Niagara yearly in basketball, with Canisius being a more feirce rival than Niagara since we are both City of Buffalo campuses. St Bonaventure/UB basketball is more rare, but we did renue it the last 2 seasons after not playing for over a decade.

UC is a nonleague rival in both fb and bb, but in basketball we also play Dayton, Xavier, and Wright State every year.

BG considers UT and Miami U as rivals. No-one out of conference is a real rival. In hockey is used to be Mich St (again a conference foe) but I imagine that's back to normal.

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
NIU will never get Northwestern to play us on a regular basis, they don't want to create a possible rivalry with a non-AQ school. So we don't have any OOC rivalry (or in-conference, except Toledo 03-wink ) and don't play anyone regularly enough to create one.

NIU vs NU just makes too much sense so it will never happen. Illness would be a good one as well but will never happen, too much at risk for the big boys. I would be fine with doing 2 for 1 with NU, last time at NU the NIU fans filled almost half the stadium, they were selling NIU gear outside, probably pissed off some but it was cool to see. NU is closer to a lot of the alumni then NIU.

Anyone who thinks a major conference school considers a MAC school as an OOC rival is embarrassing themselves. Stop. You look silly.

You could ask 1000 fans, coaches, AD's and players of UK, OSU, UM, MSU, WVU, UL, UC, Pitt, etc. and not one would name a MAC school as one of their main OOC rivals.

We are "opponents."

Especially since they have our last AD.

Though a game at the Cell is much more likely for a neutral game as a game at SF would have no chance of selling out.

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
I think Miami would certainly be mentioned by many at UC as an OOC football rivalry. We have lost quite a bit of luster to this series since UC has began to dominate the series, esp since moving on up to a BCS conference. Miami still leads the all time series and in the decades of the 80's and 90's the series was very close in those 10 year periods....you go back to the 70's and Miami dominated that decade.......UC has been blowing us out the last few years which is disconcerting.

Actually U of Detroit in hoops used to be kind of a rivalry for the Rockets.
Some of us were actually around for the Haywood fight.

Rockets still don't have return invites for Michigan, Penn State, and don't think OSU will be sending one out in the near future.

And this means...?

Of course, MAC teams are competitive at times with these schools and occasionally beat them, but that is not the same as the two schools considering themselves rivals. Rivalries are mutual relationships.

All the Ohio MAC schools would love to beat OSU, but it's a one-way street. To OSU, we are the Washington Generals.
