RE: If you like basketball
Huskiebob, I am not calling Michigan anything. Michigan had the same record as osu and msu. The point is a Mac ftball team cannot beat a Bigten team that has the best conference record but a Mac bball team can!

Can't? Like when Miami beat Northwestern the year Northwestern went undefeated in the Big Ten and went to the Rose Bowl? Sure, that was about 17 years ago, but anything can happen at any time.

I'm still not sure what your point is. You're trying to put a blanket argument on one fluke win. Michigan would easily win a 7 game series with Ohio, but that's not the point. Upsets are what March Madness is all about.

You're also making bad assumptions about how good the teams are. I know what the conference records say, but look at the body of work objectively. Ohio is the best team in the MAC and Michigan is the 3rd or 4th best team in the Big Ten.

Niubrad00, I do not believe Michigan would beat Ohio in a seven game series. If it were 7 games in Michigan yes but 7 games at nuetral site or 3 games in Athens, no way. Ohio was the third best Mac team. If Miami beat Northwestern it was at the start of the season. Ohio beat Michigan after Michigan tied for Bigten crown thats a big difference. I do not think Miami wouldve beat the Bigten champs. The point is I believe the Mac is a better bball conference than a ftball conference! Many people say the Mac is a bad bball conference and I believe they are wrong. A blanket stupid statement would be to say Michigan would beat Ohio in a seven game series, when they only played once and Ohio won!

I don't think too many people can disagree with that, at least if they are thinking objectively and not emotionally. The MAC overall has been and is still a respected basketball conference for D-I basketball. The only people who seem to argue it are some fans associated within the MAC! Which I find really odd......

And is still playing.
Overall, the conference ranking for the MAC has been fairly strong over the years. You can say what you want, but saying it doesn't make it true. The MAC has been a well-respected conference overall. You can argue with the experts opinions all you want. It won't change the conference rankings.

Niusfactuary, a 13 seed in the ncaa tourney is more respect than any Mac ftball team has gotten. The bowl games that the Mac teams go to is a big joke! The bottom line is the Mac is just below average in bball and the second to worst conference in ftball. There is alot of work to do in both sports. I believe attendance is the conferences biggest problem.

RE: If you like basketball
You're comparing apples and oranges.

Just below average in D-1 Basketball = 16th best conference out of 31
Second worst conference in D-1 Football FBS (the highest subdivision) = 10th best conference out of 25 D-1 conferences

Listen, I'm ecstatic that a MAC team is in the sweet 16, and I think they have a real shot to beat UNC. But to say the MAC is a well-respected conference in basketball? C'mon.

The MAC has been ranked over the years in the 1-17 range, more often in the 12-14 range since they started ranking conferences. Thats way ahead of many conferences that people assume are stronger. And that's pretty well respected. People across the country probably know of the MAC from hoops more than the gridiron - that would be my assumption.

I doubt that very much.

There are more fans of college football than college basketball.

There are more MAC football games on TV than MAC basketball games.

More MAC fans attend the 5-7 home football games than the 15 or so home basketball games.

RE: If you like basketball
People here at my work, about 2 hours from Dekalb, are what could be termed casual sports fans. Probably like the vast majority of sports fans in America they are interested in sports and watch it from time to time, follow it in the papers, and etc, but don't get into sports like the minority (who would bother to live our lives through message boards with others of the select minority). Until last year or the year before these people didn't know that NIU was in the BCS division of football. They thought the MAC was in with the MoValley and other smaller schools under the old AA title. But they knew about Kent State, Miami-OH, Ohio and etc. from the NCAA basketball tournaments over the years. I don't think that is uncommon for common fans who, if they watch a college football game, only watch the big 6 conferences. The MAC isn't known as a BCS conference much outside of the areas that have MAC schools, and obviously according to my co-workers even within a short distance away!

You've made a great point...

about why there should be a playoff system in football.

People know Kent State and Ohio the same way people know VCU and Butler. I guarantee they don't know what conference they're from.

I would love a college football playoff. It would make bowl season worth watching.

RE: If you like basketball
There are 11 conferences at the d-1a level in ftball. These schools get 85 schollys. If u dont compete with the same amount of schollys then you are in a different division. The Mac is second to worst in this division in ftball. In bball its 13 schollys. All bball conferences that compete under these rules are the same. The Mac ranks around the middle of this division. Example: Siu-carbondale is not in the same division as Ohio St in ftball but is in bball.
