Temple was never... a full member of the BE. Just football only

That was the Big East fault for they should have been pushing for all sports membership instead of pushing them out the door.

Temple is worthless. There's good reason why they were passed over for membership a full ten times since they were kicked out.

  1. Louisville
  2. Cincinnati
  3. South Florida
  4. TCU
  5. Houston
  6. SMU
  7. Central Florida
  8. Boise State
  9. San Diego State
  10. Memphis

I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember reading that even in these glory days of Temple football, the Owls have never beaten a MAC team that wound up with a winning conference record.

Yea, because of your school...Villanova...

If you are gonna say you are a fan of Alabama, maybe you should have signed up using a username that you don't use on the Villanova board...

Villanova basketball and undergrad; Alabama football and grad school.

And the fact that I cheer for Villanova has no effect on how few people care about Temple and how poor their football product has been for decades.

Oh really? And Villanova is going to sell-out to get 4x their normal football attendance to fill a soccer stadium?

Fact is, Temple's value is as an all-sports member and Villanova knew this. They got the other non-football schools to keep Temple out. This was put out their by many media outlets and I have heard this from people in Temple's administration. Temple would have been an all-sports invite a lot earlier in the process if it wasn't for Villanova...Villanova is scared, and they should be...

Yes! Like as early as 1995 when Rutgers and WVU were added to the BE and Villanova and it Catholic School cabal kept Temple out... it has been a long time coming

I have never said anything about Villanova football. I don't care about Villanova football, and whether or not Villanova could get as many people to a football game against UConn as they can for a basketball game against UConn is debatable and completely not at issue.

What matters is that Temple football has been abysmal for decades. Villanova had nothing to do with Temple's getting kicked out of the conference for lack of performance on the field, in the stands, and in TV ratings. That was all on Temple.

Nobody has denied that Villanova does not want Temple as an all-sport member, especially not if Villanova is not invited as a football member. But there are 15 other votes in the Big East who could add Temple and they haven't seen the need to -- not until every single other possible option has been exhausted.

Not true...if the non-football schools vote as a block, the big east by-laws state that the vote is automatically a 50-50 split...All the BE non-football schools were voting as a block...

Temple's value is as an all-sports member...Villanova knew this and the BE knew that the non-football schools would not let Temple in because of VU's stance. So they went in different directions. They needed western schools to get BSU too. Memphis was got in before Temple because of Villanova's stance against Temple. I have heard from some people very close to the situation that VU and the voting block are 100% the reason that Temple was not invited earlier...

Now some members like St. John's and Seton Hall seemed to have changed their stance...

Let me set the record straight: Temple is not in the Big Best because their football program was a money-sucking embarrassment to the conference.

Temple hasn't been offered all-sport membership over the last decade for the same reason that Xavier isn't a member of the Big East -- because it duplicates a market without bringing enough value to justify its entry.

Have fun blaming Villanova for your woes, but realize that if Temple were a more valuable asset Villanova wouldn't have a say.

Beating #3 Duke en route to an A10 Championship season, as well as having a strong season in football punctuated with a dominant performance in a bowl game, goes pretty far...

Life is pretty good for Temple fans, with coaches like Dunphy and Addazio in place.

I think people probably slammed you because it was an absurd suggestion. I mean why not target Western Michigan or Ball State instead?

Seriously, every single other Big East team, except maybe SMU, would be a better choice for the ACC than Temple.

Temple is a low ceiling choice for the Big East but the truth is that it has very few options available to it and it needs to fill football games next season so Temple it is.

Yeah, that's laughable. We've been on ESPN or ESPN2 six times this year for basketball. That doesn't include ESPNU and CBSCS. I highly doubt Miami hockey has been on TV more than us, especially since college hockey is rarely on national TV.

OK, I wasn't thinking about ESPN who doesn't carry hockey until the Frozen Four. I was looking at CBSSports whom the A-10 has their TV contract with. Temple Basketball and Miami Hockey both have had 3 broadcasts nationally on CBSSports this year. Miami is also on the Fox Sports Networks and Big Ten Network when playing on the road. So OK, JHG722, I didn't do all my homework and the ESPN appearances give Temple bball a couple game's edge. You win on that point. My point was that college hockey is gaining ground on basketball and is not a bad sport to be good at.

Doc,
How many other schools in the country, nevermind the BE, can claim that their 3 revenue sports - fball, m bball and w bball - over the past 3 seasons(including this one) that they were bowl eligible and both bball teams made the tournament???
You can count them on less than 1 hand and Temple is one of them.

Where does Temple rank in total wins over the past 3 years for total wins in all 3 sports combined?
Again, Temple is in top 5.

Check the sagarins ratings for the last 2-3 years and what school is in the top half of both the old BE and the new BE?

Attendance for fball has increased 83% over the last 5 years and increasing year by year. A winning team in the BE conference can only help.

Bball avg attendance was 8300 this year while playing in the A10. ACC average as a conference in 10-11 was 9936. Avg BE bball was 11082. Again, Temple was close to the ACC avg and less than 3k from the BE average playing an a10 schedule.

And Temple lays right smack in the middle of the ACC footprint in the 4th largest market.

In the last 13 years, on campus students have increased from 3k to 12k with a goal of 16k within the next 2-3 years.

This isnt the Temple of the 90s!

Man, that is fugly.

Not sure how Memphis got invited before Temple, but I hope to see the Owls announced soon.

Before the Tiger fans come pounding I think at some point Memphis would've been invited but your football program is just terrible. There's no avoiding it. I have high hopes for the new staff at UM, I hope it works out.

There's no reason Memphis shouldn't be competitive with all that talent in the region - may start to take away some of the potential USM recruits given the Big East status. We'll see.
