In an ideal world (for me, at least), the Bengals would address the interior offensive line and CB positions with their 2 first round picks, grab a LB or WR in the 2nd, and nab Pead in the third.

Dare to dream...

I think both Guidugli and Robinson were underrated by many - don't forget that Ben is still in the NFL with the Rams as far as I can tell.

Guidugli = classic hard charging overachiever. What did have have a UC offer, maybe Colorado late in the process. Worked his ass off.
Adrien had multiple Big East, Big East and Big Ten offers.

Robinson definitely wasn't underrated coming out of HS. He was largely considered the prize of that class. He was still a little raw/awkward his first couple of years, once he hit his stride in the college game we just weren't throwing to the tight end a whole lot.

I hope Travis Kelce gets more looks this year. Similar build to A-Rob and one of the best athletes on the team. It'd be a shame if he came and went with his career highlight being a couple wildcat TD's at Rutgers.

I'm not sure how this became about high school rankings or what that has to do with it. I was referring to the fact that Ben didn't get a lot of publicity over his career at UC yet is in the NFL and that Robinson has a chance to do the same thing.

I agree about Kelce and could see him following in Ben's footsteps.

Uh, you brought up their offers coming out of high school. And I was agreeing with you in that Robinson was highly regarded across the board.

Pead is gonna be off the board by early 3rd round, he offers too much. I have a strange feeling he is going to end up in Washington.

I think Pead is a great back but I do not think he is an every down back. He will be successful on a team that utilizes his skills but does not wear him out. He is not big enough to be an every down back. He reminds me of K Faulk on the Patriots and if used like Kevin was will have a long and productive career.

Uh, no I didn't. I don't think the NFL cares much about their high school ratings/offers. I was talking about them not getting a lot of attention during their UC careers - yet possibly making an NFL roster. It happened with Guidugli, could happen with Robinson this year, and it wouldn't shock me if it happened with Kelce although that's a little down the line.

Thought I was talking to SuperFlyBCat. My bad.

Bengals could stay local looking for RB
TheSportsXchange_185.gif

March 4, 2012

--The Bengals normally shy away from players from the University of Cincinnati, but both coach Marvin Lewis and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden were intrigued over the possibility of taking Isaiah Pead in the middle rounds.

"I like his versatility, no question. Guys that can catch and run," said Gruden of Pead. "He didn't have the luxury of having an offense like others from the true I standpoint with a lot of powers and downhill runs. It was more shotgun type, an inside zone, outside zone type guy where he really didn't get a chance to go downhill a lot and run between the tackles, but he's a very good player."

--Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer remains concerned about the off-field issues surrounding linebacker Rey Maualuga and noted that "at some point in time we all have to grow up."

Zimmer also noted that there are times when you have to walk away from things.

Added Zimmer: "I consider myself kind of a tough guy, but I'm smart enough to understand. That happened to me one time. I was in Cincinnati. I was in a parking lot. We flip each other off. He gets out of the car and he's coming up. Little bitty scrawny guy ... I had to make a decision. Am I going to beat the crap out of this guy and I may get fined or every other thing? Or do I swallow my pride and go on?"

Besides Lewis, Zimmer is also entering the final season of his three-year contract. However he does see himself back with the Bengals next season if he was unable to get a head coaching job. Zimmer has been in Cincinnati since 2008.

"Sure. You never know. I can't predict the future," Zimmer said. "Maybe they won't want me here next year. So many different things can happen."

--Wide receiver Jerome Simpson accepted a plea deal to a felony drug charge of prohibited acts relating to controlled substances. He is expected to serve a 60-day sentence once he is formally sentenced on April 5.

Simpson is slated to be an unrestricted free agent, but with the Bengals penchant for going after high-risk players, he could be re-signed in May or June. Simpson is the fourth Bengal to be involved in an off-field incident over the past seven months.

The Bengals said in a statement: "As the legal process is still not complete, we will continue to withhold comment at this time."

I would LOVE to know what started this perception. Is there a site listing all UC players that have been on a NFL roster?

I honestly wouldn't think any other team in the NFL would come even close to having as many former Bearcats on their all-time roster as the Bengals.

The only thing I can think of is it's a perception based upon several UC sleepers (by that I'm talking about guys who probably out-performed their draft status) at least arguably like Cole, Kelce, Celek, Haruki, Link, Wright etc. It's one thing to miss out on a sleeper from SE Louisiana St. or whatever, but you'd think you'd be able to know the guys in your backyard inside-out.

But as you noted, the theory doesn't seem to hold much water when you start thinking about all the UC guys who at least spent a little time with the Bengals. The reality is that there are 32 NFL teams and no matter how much you evaluate a prospect, we're still talking about humans evaluating the future of other humans and that's never going to be perfect.
