I almost could understand it better if it was a big-time quarterback or basketball player who thought they could position themselves better for the NFL or NBA as opposed to a volleyball player.

These girls were all recruited by the husband/wife team of ass't coaches. In my opinion these two had much more to do with the recent success of the team than coach Gooden. There has to be more to this story.

I guess we'll have to.....
"Read Tuesday's Daily Chronicle for more."

It's like a TV series.

"With a short time to reflect, merely hours after returning to campus, Wicinski has a change in motivation.

“This is where these girls are and I want to be there,” Wicinski said. “I want to be on a national, high-caliber team like this. This experience made me comeback and realize that I want to be there and be the best that I can."

From NIU Today and Fox articles. Assumed she was talking about the national team, but it sounds like this gave her the push to leave.

I wonder how long coaches Coley and Dan Pawikowski will stay at NIU. I just read her bio in the coaches section of the NIU volleyball team,. It was extremely impressive!

Somebody (probably a coach a high end college team that is involved with the National Team) got to her during the tryouts. If she wants to go, release her and don't let the door hit you on the way out. Shame that you cannot even hold onto a kid where both parents are grads. Stinks of tampering by another school, but nothing we can really do about it.

Last summer Chandler went to the awards ceremony in Ohio and visited OSU. There he realized what the team needed to do to become champions and even take that next step. He came back and pushed everyone on the team to do what they could to improve.

Wincinski is taking the easy way out and letting other people lead her instead of taking over as the leader of the team here. Why does she think that NIU CANT be a national team in the next two years with her taking the lead and making the program better?

+1

Similar to high school where you see high-powered (and well-financed) club teams recruiting players and they dump their varsity teams and play club sports year-round.

True, but I don't think she needs to go anywhere to prepare herself for that. Apparently she's already competitive with those really good players. Like the other poster said, Harnish went to an event with other college stars and came back motivated to make himself AND his own team better.

No doubt Wicinski became convinced she had to go to a higher-level school to reach her potential as a volleyball player. Considering both her parents were NIU athletes, that made the decision that much harder for her. I'm sure that Lauren's decision was really difficult for Rob and Gina.

We should probably cut her a little slack.

She can do whatever she wants, but it does seem like she's just abandoning the team. Surprised someone couldn't sit down with her and convince her that despite what someone at the National team event told her, she can get where she wants to go also by staying at NIU.

That would be a hard sell. NIU is not considered a national power in volleyball. This was arguably our best year ever and we weren't even ranked at the end of the year.

Yea, I suppose that's true....but I'd have to think that volleyball is like other sports where players from non-power schools still get their chance. If she was doing that well at an event like that it's obvious they're already aware of her and she's already made a strong case.

Or bring Todd Kress back, he's at Buffalo now. He's won here. Or maybe there's someone with ties to Pete Waite out there.

Very interesting....if the release isn't granted, she'd have to sit out a year on the vball court right? At least at a bigger school? Seems that could hurt her chances of playing the big time once more.

If her reason is to "play at a bigger school", you don't give the release. I'm very surprised she was quoted as saying that, it's not an appropriate reason for a release.

I doubt that AD Compher is even thinking about firing Coach Gooden.
