It's not a significant cost issue, but flying lots of miles across three or four time zones the day before a game has a greater impact on a team than traveling in the same time zone or the next one over. Check the record of teams playing road games two or more time zones away versus their road record in the same time zone or only one away.

The Pac, SEC, B1G, and B12 (with the addition of WVU) are all two-time-zone leagues. The ACC is a one-time-zone league.

Will be interesting to see the impact of travel on conference play in football and hoops once the new coast-to-coast conferences get rolling.

hoops- won't have any effect. Most likely the alliance won't have cross divisional play, so no issues there. Big East has all hoops teams in 2 time zones.

RE: Island Schools
Notre Dame is an "island" school.

Their football team begins next season in Ireland and ends it in Los Angeles. (They tried to schedule a 13th game to end the season at Hawaii, but that fell through because another team had a game with Hawaii on 12/1 and would not move it).

Their other sports travel all over the country as a Big East member. Baseball opened in Florida, is in North Carolina this weekend and will make trips to Texas and Louisiana before playing its first home game on 3/18.

Their hockey team travels all over as well as a member of their conference.

In this day and age of air travel, is it really that big of a deal?

Really? The only reason Notre Dame is not playing at Hawaii is because South Alabama objected? Couldn't someone write USA a check, or give them a future game in South Bend, to get them to play at Hawaii in another year?

This. ND has fallen to historic lows if they can't get teams like this to accommodate them.

Oh, I am not complaining, Bit,not at all.

I kinda like it that way.

I just think the whole "island" and travel cost issues are a little overblown.

Still seems like someone could have made USA a deal and put some money in their pockets. Notre Dame wanted to play there, Hawaii wanted ND to play there, CBS (IIRC) has the MWC TV rights and would get a ND game to show...

So do I. This isn't the 1800s, when everyone rode around on horses. We have planes, trains, and automobiles...

I think that ND thought it would be cool for the final ND game for two Hawaiians on the roster (Manti Teo, Robby Toma) to be at Hawaii.

However, it didn't seem all that important for them to play that 13th game there.
