Temple in Talks to Join Big East in All Sports
By PETE THAMEL
Published: February 22, 2012

The Big East is in discussions to add Temple for all sports as early as the next school year, according to someone briefed on the talks. Temple belongs to the Mid-American Conference and the Atlantic 10 in various sports and there are legal issues that have to be dealt with before the Owls would be able to leave. A resolution is expected this month.

Within the next month, Temple will also have to inform the new conference formed by the merger of the Mountain West and Conference USA of its intentions. Temple has been asked to join that league.

Temple is a former member of the Big East in football. It was thrown out in 2004 for consistently underperforming, but it now serves a two-fold purpose for the league.

If Temple is able to maneuver out of the MAC, it will fill an immediate void in the Big East’s football schedule that was created by West Virginia’s move to the Big 12, where the Mountaineers will begin play next season. West Virginia’s move to the Big 12 and its $20 million exit fee were completed within the last month, leaving the Big East with the logistical nightmare of attempting to fill holes in its football schedule on extremely short notice.

Temple’s football team will also add value to the Big East beyond scheduling convenience. Since being booted out of the Big East, the Owls have transformed their program. Temple beat Connecticut two years ago when UConn won the Big East, and the Owls were 9-4 under the first-year coach Steve Addazio last season, including a decisive victory over Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl.

Temple would also give the Big East a much-needed boost in basketball. Along with West Virginia, the Big East is losing the original members Pittsburgh and Syracuse in the next few years. Louisville Coach Rick Pitino has been a prominent voice lobbying for Temple’s addition. The Owls consistently appear in the N.C.A.A. tournament team and the program has a rich history and a strong fan base.

The addition of Temple would bring the total of Big East programs to 13 in football and 18 in basketball.

If they are adding Memphis then I'm okay with them adding Temple. How many teams are they trying to get to from a football standpoint? I guess the goal is to make sure they stay at 12 or more if anyone else were to jump ship.

Plus, now you really do have the Philly TV market with Nova and Temple. I think it helps in all phases we needed.... more Eastern Football, more TV's, better basketball , safety in numbers. I think would really make Rutgers, UCONN and Navy happy ..Now who will 14 be? I would think another West team obvious first choice BYU, Air Force...then who UNLV? for the market?

From a fball perspective it does nothing for me. Of course neither did Memphis. I guess this was done to appease the bball powers, while filling a spot on the fball side.

I guess this means no Boise State next season.

From a football side it probably increases the chances that UC ends up in the West. Really don't want to end up in the West since there will be no short road trips (Outside of Memphis and Louisville). Maybe they will decide to put the Florida schools out west instead, but I would guess the Cats are hosed.

RE: Temple coming to Big East?
i think UC , USF and UL all want in the East. I think you see UCF shipped West. They are the newbies and have no say...It is USF President and Our President Williams who have taken control of the entire saving of the Big East as it is today. I think Rutgers, UConn, UL, UC and USF all want to stay together due to distance and rivalries started.

cbssports reporting that BE wanted Boise for next year, however BE was not willing to cover the buyout. Also, indicates BE trying to get to 13 teams in anticipation of Loserville ending up in the B12.

Gets you 8/16 teams for 2012

A championship game starting in 2013

A cushion if Louisville leaves

Makes you wonder if someone (NBC?) might be behind the scenes pulling some strings to make sure the Big East has exposure in the biggest TV markets.

Is it in NBC's best interest to pay more by having Big East teams in bigger television markets or get the Big East on the cheap?

helps basketball but also makes me think that this flirting between the Big 12 Louisville is going to finally end and they'll get an invite, which upsets me

RE: Temple coming to Big East?
Why would you take the windfall from WVU 20 million and give it back just to have Boise one year early? This way at most it may cost you zero to 5 million to get Temple. It is also a much easier/cheaper/winable road trip for teams like UC this coming year who had WVU as away games.

Good to hear.

Talk about kicking XU when they are down. The A10 wasn't much with Temple. Take them out and it's not looking too hot.
