Ohio State loses assistant Bill Sheridan

So much for Bill Sheridan's Big Ten homecoming.

Sheridan, hired late last month to coach Ohio State's cornerbacks, is heading back to the NFL. Ohio State confirmed to ESPN.com that Sheridan has left the program to "pursue other opportunities," and The Lantern first reported he'll be joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' staff as defensive coordinator.

The NFL teams from Florida have been poaching Big Ten staffs in recent weeks. The Miami Dolphins added Iowa offensive coordinator Ken O'Keefe and Purdue secondary coach Lou Anarumo. Sheridan now heads to Tampa to work for new Bucs coach Greg Schiano.

Sheridan spent the previous seven seasons in the NFL but had Big Ten roots as a former assistant at both Michigan (2002-04) and Michigan State (1998-2000). It would have been interesting to see him coach on both sides of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. Hard to fault him for jumping to be a coordinator in the NFL.

Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer will look for a replacement who can work primarily with the cornerbacks. Co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers will coach the safeties.

If we lose McNutt because of Tampa Bay, we need to start hating Greg Schiano and I'm a bucs fan

Before Sheridan was hired, McNutt wasn't on any of the lists of possible candidates. Hopefully, he isn't this time either.
