RE: Bracketbusters
2012 MAC BracketBuster Games (RPI)

77 Buffalo @ 63 South Dakota State [ESPNU, 1 p.m.]
61 Akron @ 48 Oral Roberts [ESPN/ESPN2, 2 p.m.]
117 UNC-Asheville @ 98 Ohio [ESPN3, 7 p.m.]
120 College of Charleston @ 79 Kent State [STO, 6 p.m.]
179 Western Michigan @ 144 North Dakota State
220 Eastern Michigan @ 166 Green Bay
234 Southern Illinois @ 245 Ball State
182 Morehead State @ 153 Bowling Green
255 Toledo @ 277 Sam Houston State
325 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi @ 264 Central Michigan
332 Northern Illinois @ 314 SIU Edwardsville
133 Tennessee State @ 241 Miami

If I were to guess right now, I'd say 7-5.

Wins = Buffalo, Ohio, Kent State, WMU, Ball St, BG, CMU
Losses = Akron, EMU, Toledo, NIU, Miami

I have a feeling either Buffalo or Akron will win, but I think Akron has a tougher opponent. Of course, I could also see the WMU, Balll St., BG, Toledo, and NIU games going the other way.

Should be a fun day of basketball.

Tennessee State is coming off a big W over Murray State. Hard to believe the SIU Edwardsville has a higher RPI than NIU...Edwardsville is just a branch campus site and not even the main SIU campus which is in Carbondale.

What's worse than that is that, until recently, i didn't realize SIU-E was a Division I school! how awful for NIU!

If there is any chance I can schedule myself off from work tomorrow, I hope to head to to Tulsa to see Akron play Oral Roberts. Haven't seen a MAC game (hoops or football) in person for at least 2-3 years.

A win is a win in NIU's case. A loss, however, would be truly awful.

RE: Bracketbusters
I think it is time to put the bracketbuster to bed for good.

Can anyone cite even one instance where it has actually been the difference in a team making the big dance, or getting a better seed?

Despite it producing some matchups that otherwise would not happen, it has not lived up to its original billing. It comes as an OOC game right in the beginning of crunch time in the schedule, when you hope your team is focused on the conference race.

What are you talking about? The Bracketbusters was originally intended to showcase mid-major teams who might end up busting people's brackets in the tournament. It was never meant to boost teams or make a difference in whether they were selected.

To that end, it's still doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

RE: Bracketbusters
It's valuable to the top teams in it and completely meaningless to the rest. I understand why 80% of the teams who have been in it haven't seen any value. But it's been great for KSU. Great exposure every year but two, and a win over a ranked St. Mary's team on the road one year that was key to get a 9 seed in the tourney. It's really only designed to benefit a handful of schools. All the TV teams get exposure and the outcomes will affect the tourney slots of a few of those.

George Mason in the year of their Final Four run would not have made the tourney without their BB win. VCU last year as well. As to the majority of teams playing in insignificant games? Who cares? The rest of their games in their conferences are insignificant, too. No harm.

RE: Bracketbusters
The MAC will probably end up 7-5 in the Bracketbusters. Getting 8 or more wins would boost the conference, though.

There's a kind of parallel with the non-BCS bowls here. A match with a similar team and most of the games are meaningless, but a good record can do great things for the conference like we saw when we went 4-1 in bowls.

Bowl games aren't meaningless because with them comes TV time, and cash for the schools. The only game with TV time is Akron, and no-one's making a big pay day off of these games.

RE: Bracketbusters
right now tou take advantage of games.
Buffalo, Kent & Ohio are barelly projecteted to make NIT
you have to get out of bottom 8, so regular season champs
who lose conf tourn don't bump you out.
more wins the better

Well, right now UB is down to the SDSU wabbits, getting thumped so far. Down 12 at half.

C'mon Bulls. We have 3 Summit/MAC head-to-heads today. Get going and let's get the road win.

WMU lost at SDSU to open the season 82 - 76.

Heard an interview with Shaka Smart today, the head coach at VCU, who made a final four run last year. He said his team would not have been in the tournament last year had it not been for the Bracketbuster win over Wichita St last year.

I am just waiting for the Rockets to play a meaningful Bracketbuster game again soon.

RE: Bracketbusters
Shows how far the MAC is behind the Summitt League. Despite all the advantages the MAC has being an FBS conference, the conferences has slid behind schools that have only been in division I less than 10 years. WCC, MWC, WAC, MVC, CAA, and Horizon passed the MAC several years ago. MAC top teams aren't even competitive today with the best of the Summitt League. Akron and Buffalo are the MAC's best two teams. Was hoping they would make a step forward today, but that didn't happen.

Hopefully, WMU will get the MAC to a 1 - 2 mark against the Summit League tonight vs NDSU.

Maybe I need to start a (parody) thread about the horrible MAC East and how it is making the MAC look bad on TV today.

Just kidding, of course. I am pulling for all MAC teams today but we aren't doing very well at the top.
