Any thoughts? I saw this mentioned elsewhere. If they merge do they keep their bids to the NCAA tourney?

They would only have one autobid.

If it is a new league then they have no autobids for a number of years (what is it like 8?). That is one of the risks of making a new conference rather than stealing from another. Granted the conference will have enough decent basketball teams to get a couple of bids.

at large bids for this conference might be hard to come by with as much dead weight as it will likely have - which is one of the reasons they'll try to add utah state and make a run at temple.

The way the rule works is for a conference to maintain an automatic bid a group of 7 schools that have been playing each other consecutively for 2 seasons.

In the alliances case, the MWC group has not been playing together long enough to transfer their autobid under the new conferences name. CUSA however has its core 8 schools playing together since 2005 so the new conference will transfer CUSA's automatic bid to the alliance.

The answer is CUSA's automatic bid will be transferred to the new conference. The NCAA will then issue automatic bids to 30 conferences down from 31 because of the merger, giving the NCAA field another at-large.
