RE: Feelings about MWC & CUSA Merger (NIU & MAC as a whole being SNUBBED)
You don't think the MAC might lose out on guaranteed bowl berths with a new mega conference with a tv deal?

College football is about exposure (Hence when Notre Dame was the only team on TV of course they got all the good recruits) but now that each conference has it's own TV network and ESPN/ABC/CBS/FOX tie-in, soon the bowl games will be decided by the networks(as if they aren't already when the majority are aired on ESPN affiliates(yes including ABC).

$$$ talks in the NCAA and teams in the MAC don't have it, nor do they have a dominant team that can just go choose a conference (TCU, Boise ST). NIU is relegated to the MAC for many reasons:
1. $$$ and not just donations, but lack of attendance at real sports(according to big conferences) of Basketball and Football
2. Lack of cosistent winning in previous seasons. sure 9-3, 10-2 are good in the BCS conferences but to make a mark in a small conference you have to be 11-1 and 12-0 almost every year
3. Facilities
4. Fan base

Early word is the Alliance TV package will be bigger than what is currently in place for all teams involved from CUSA and MWC. If under consideration, NIU should do a deep dive on if the Alliance would make sense. Bigger crowds, better TV, presumably more Saturday games. There are definitely a few reasons to at least consider a move if the option exists. If NIU were interested in the Alliance, the best angle would be to talk up a connection to Chicago and the exposure having them in the conference would bring to the Alliance in the Chicago market. It seems the early list of expansion candidates for the Alliance are bringing TV markets with them.

Also, noted that WAC commish Benson is moving to the Sun Belt. No reason not think he will either merge the two or take from the WAC to improve the Sun Belt. I like the MAC but NIU needs to at least consider any options that exist. The landscape is changing very fast.

CAA also just announced a TV deal with NBC Sports. There is definitely money out there to be had.

Too bad that doesn't apply to us because the MAC is owned by ESPN.

Would it be worth it if a group of MAC schools joined it to form the NE Division of the alliance? NIU, WMU, Toledo, Temple, Ohio, UMass, ECU, Marshall

Someone mentioned half the current "Alliance" members are under the 100 mark in the 5-yr avg Sagarin ratings. The top 5 Mac teams and a good potential candidate in UMass may make good additions to help their footprint.

I would not be for it if a group of MAC schools didnt join it though.
