WAC- wtf?
Did I see it right on Dennis Dodd's piece that the WAC ousted Karl Benson? That's just bizarre- doesn't make sense at all.

RE: WAC- wtf?
Supposedly Benson's WAC contract was expiring and he asked for a four-year extension and was turned down by the WAC presidents.

How'd he end up at the Sunbelt. That's a conference that is in a position of strength.

According to some tweets, he asked for the extension last year and the WAC board shot him down. It would be nice to know what the vote was and who made what votes.

I have a feeling that some Texas Schools will be joining the Sunbelt very soon.

Would be interesting to know who voted against the extension, especially in the case of WAC schools that might soon be trying to get into the Sun Belt. You can just hear the groveling presidents: "Karl, I've always admired the job you did for the WAC, sure, I rounded up all the votes against that contract extension you wanted, but let's let bygones be bygones! Am I right, Karl?"

And Benson is already talking about expansion in the Sunbelt.

In another thread here, too.

Well Benson tried that power play to raid the MWC and it completely backfired in his face. My guess is that's what got him ousted. I respect the attempt, but it pretty much caused the WAC to die as a league, which is sad.

Yeah, but how does that resume, plus the WAC-16 fiasco, get you another job? It would be like hiring Marinatto as the new commissioner for the Alliance.

I didn't say it should have gotten him another job, just commenting on why the WAC told him to take a hike. I can respect what he tried, it just blew up in his face.

Huh??? When did the WAC try to raid the MWC??

When BYU went indy. Before Nevada and Co left the WAC for the MWC.

Yup, it blew up in his face but if he could of pulled off getting BYU it would of been a major coup and the WAC would be a stronger confrence.

Im ok with Benson, its not like we were going to get a lot better. Wright Waters wanted to reitre years ago and the 'Belt presidents talked him out of it, hence why I feel he wasnt very aggressive with the confrence.

He kept it afloat, improved its performance, and left it a lil better then he got it. Now we have to hope that Benson can move it along further.

I'd still appreciate hearing from someone who had an idea exactly what went down.

When BYU left the MWC, they were going to put their nonfootball sports in the WAC, schedule 4?6? WAC teams a year, and somehow this was going to lure Boise State to stay in the WAC. The MWC turned around an invited Fresno State and Nevada, and later Hawaii.

RE: WAC- wtf?
I think their thought was to do that- and then if Boise were to stay, poach a few teams from the MWC.

MWC would then have had only
TCU, Wyoming, Colorado St, New Mexico, San Diego St, UNLV
WAC would then have had:
Boise, Utah St, New Mexico St, Idaho, La Tech, Hawaii, San Jose St, Nevada, and Fresno St.

You can easily see why they did that. If BYU had come, and the others had stayed put, they would have been it, and the MWC would have been dead.

And, I'll say this- if that had happened, the alliance thing we're seeing now would have been a LOT different. For one, ESPN would have been involved in a positive light. ESPN would have told them if you combine, and also take teams x y and z from Big East- we'll give you this much money.

You forgot Air Force. Fixed. MWC would have had 7, then 6 when TCU left for the Big East. This all does explain how Nevada made it into the MWC.

BYU wanted to leave the MWC and asked Benson if they could place Olympic sports in the WAC. Benson knew if he said "yes", the MWC would get pissed and try to blow the WAC up. He had everyone in the WAC sign an agreement than they wouldn't leave the WAC and pledge a $5 Million exit fee. Everyone signed it and he invited BYU. The MWC did retaliate by inviting Fresno and Nevada to try to blow the WAC up and Fresno and Nevada took the offer and the WAC blew up.

He wasn't really trying to take teams from the MWC, but the thought was that if BYU came, it might trigger some more moves from MWC to WAC.

Good catch. Still, you can see why the WAC was trying that.

Recall back to the time when BYU was leaving the MWC to go independent The Y was working on joining the WAC and pull 2-4 MWC teams with it AND then Hair Thompson and MWC invited UNR & FSU within days of the new WAC emrging. This was the story/rumor out there.

RE: WAC- wtf?
I believe that it was either Fresno or Nevada that tipped off Thompson about the WAC coup. He reacted by quickly inviting Fresno and Nevada to join the MWC to stop BYU from joining the WAC. This effectively killed off the WAC, especially when Hawaii was added and the WAC could get no new western FCS teams to make a move.

RE: WAC- wtf?
You guys are forgetting one thing about that fiasco. The MWC originally sent an invitation to Utah State which they refused because they had just agreed to the 5M exit penalty. It was then that the MWC invited Fresno and Nevada and withdrew their invitation from Utah State.
