West Virginia out of Big East in July
West Virginia out of Big East in July
Source: Big East to get $20 million

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University says it has settled a lawsuit with the Big East conference, clearing the way for the Mountaineers to join the Big 12 in July.

According to Brett McMurphy of CBS Sports, the Big East will get $20 million from West Virginia. The Big 12 will loan the Mountaineers $10 million but part of the loan will be forgiven by the conference.

Athletic Director Oliver Luck says WVU will pay the Big East from private sources and money that athletics raised on its own.

Luck planned a news conference later Tuesday in Morgantown. Luck said “membership in the Big 12 offers WVU significant advantages."

WVU sued the Big East in November, challenging its bylaws in a bid to join the Big 12. The Big East countersued four days later

Essentially WVU is paying $15 million and the Big XII $5 million.

I wish the conference would pay Boise State's exit fees and get them in sooner both to fill openings in schedules and for a FB strength of conference perspective.

I think the problem with Boise is that they have no idea what to do with their non-FB sports.

Agreed. Really don't want to try and get a wavier to be allowed in the BCS this year since we don't have 8 teams (They got it last go around, but would much rather have 8 teams for this year). Really don't want any of that extra Big East game home-and-home non-sense which would unbalance the schedules anyway.

I thought I had heard a report that the WAC would be willing to accept them this year, but not sure how much merit it has. Last week it was sounding like it may be a good bet for Boise to join this season. We shall see.

Boise looks closer to coming in 2012.

http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2012/02...t_wac_2012

The Western Athletic Conference is prepared to to accommodate Boise State's in 2012-13 for all non-football sports, a source in the league told the Idaho Statesman on Thursday.

The Broncos would need to move their sports to the WAC this year if they were to join the Big East in football this fall. CBSSports.com reported that Boise State was exploring its options with the WAC earlier Thursday.

The Big East is likely to need a replacement for West Virginia, which is pushing to leave for the Big 12. The departure of West Virginia would leave the Big East with just seven football members in 2012. Though there would be no BCS ramifications for the league, each member would need to find a game on late notice if West Virginia is not replaced.

It'd be nice if the BE concentrated on WVU's replacement for 2012, instead of telling us all what we already know.

Pitt and Cuse will leave after next year and pay $10 Million per, so that is $40 Million total in exit fees.

West Virginia University, the Big 12 and the Big East have settled their lawsuits. The settlement allows WVU to leave the Big East for the Big 12 on July 1, but WVU will have to pay the Big East $20 million in damages.

WVU, however, will get half of that payment from the Big 12, sources say. Five-million will be a direct gift while the remaining $5 million will be returned to the Big 12 in future years by WVU taking a smaller payout from the league.

West Virginia has already paid the Big East $2.5 million. That check was sent last fall when WVU announced it was leaving the league. Much, if not all, of the remaining $7.5 million will be covered by money owed WVU by the Big East that will not be paid.

Would UC have gone if invited to the Big 12? Maybe - who knows? The point is - I believe WVU is doing what they think is best, but I wish the Big East would have stayed intact. I think WVU's move was a reaction to Pitt and Syracuse leaving for the ACC.

The Big East - with the schools that they will end up with - will just have to schedule aggresively and beat schools from the perceived upper echelon leagues to get respect.

Seems like WVA is indeed reaction to pitt/cuse defections. I can't say I blame them...they thought it best to jump off a quickly sinking ship (in their opinion) onto a ship that was rock steady. Only thing is, they ship they jumped onto has been taking water too (see TAMU, Col, Mizz etc).

B12 financially is a great move...until Texas, Texas Tech, OU, and OSU bolt....then you are stuck with KU/KSU/Iowa State football....then, not so much.

I really like the NBE...Boise is instant national recognition as well as Navy. I think UH is a good add. I dont mind SMU/UCF/SDSU/Memphis

wish we could snag AF and BYU

To put on my optimistic hat, I don't see a bad road trip in the bunch. With that alone, I'm "fine" with the new conference, as a fan.

But, I'll be "happy" if the conference remains an AQ conference, and it gets a good TV deal. Does anyone think both will happen, or even one?
