He is an AA

Roy Manning is?

About what was expected. Don't know much about Manning and didn't realize he was here at UC in 2010. I'm assuming he'll replace Banks in covering the Michigan recruiting territory.

Steve Stripling is now run game defensive coordinator and Kerry Coombs pass game defensive coordinator. (Both titles added to other duties)

So Stripling is run game DC, Coombs is pass game DC, and Jancek is the... DC?

Probably allowed them to get extra $$$. I mean, offenses have passing game coordinators and running game coordinators so I suppose defenses can too.

Is this good or bad though? Our secondary improved, but was awful a lot of last season.

Well, Banks called the defensive plays and he's gone so it remains to be seen how Jancek will do. I wasn't enamored with the defensive play-calling for the first year and a half or so of Banks' tenure but it seemed to get better the second half of this season.

Right. You're starting to see this creative titling a lot in college football.

As far as Coombs, when we had talent in the backfield leftover from the Dantonio era we were pretty damn good under him. How well he has developed some of the guys on the team now could be debatable, but DBs isn't an easy position to cover up talent deficiencies. By the time a kid is 22 either he is fast or he isn't, either he can take a good angle or he can't.

Stripling and Coombs essentially coached the run defense and pass defense in 2011. They'll have those same roles but just a new title next to their names in 2012. John Jancek will have full-time DC duties which includes preparing the team and coaches throughout the week and calling plays on gameday.

RE: New Defensive Coordinator
Quote:Cincinnati coach Butch Jones announced the restructuring of his defensive staff following the departure of coordinator Tim Banks to Illinois.
•Roy Manning has been hired as outside linebackers coach.
•Linebackers coach John Jancek will now serve as defensive coordinator.
•Associate head coach Kerry Coombs was named defensive passing game coordinator and assistant head coach.
•Steve Stripling was named the defensive run game coordinator.
•Wide receivers coach T.J. Weist adds the additional role of recruiting coordinator.

Manning served as a graduate assistant for the Bearcats in 2010, and spent last season as an offensive graduate assistant at Michigan. It is not too surprising to see Jancek elevated to defensive coordinator. He has shared those duties with Banks the past two seasons.

“We have experienced coaches who are great teachers on and off the field and are among the best in college football,” Jones said in a statement. “It’s our job to develop these young student-athletes to be the best football players, the best students and the best people they can possibly be. And, when they finish their careers here at the University of Cincinnati, we want to make sure they leave here better people.”

I assumed it was for the same reason that people write 'WTF' instead of what the f--- or 'IMO' instead of in my opinion on the internet. Because it saves about 2 seconds of time.
