Ok. I can see the arguement for Urban Meyer. I can see the arguement for Mike Leach. But Rich Rodriquez over Malzahn. The sheer impact on recruiting and buzz around the program puts him over the top.

Urban Meyer is a proven winner. Mike Leach is a proven winner. Rodriquez a couple of good seasons in a weak Big East and fell flat on his face at Michigan. I won't even talk about the shady crap that has gone on at both places. Malzahn has produced top rated offenses and been an OC on a National Championship team. ASU got the much better hire, IMHO.

Malzahn has not been a college head coach.

Rich Rod, while a tremendous flop at Michigan, had more than "a couple of good seasons" at West Virginia. In 7 seasons he had 6 winning seasons, won at least a share of four conference championships, won two BCS bowls and in his final three seasons went a combined 33-5.

I think the reason people are high on the hire is because the job at Arizona is much more similar to West Virginia. He's in a league where finesse offense will work(unlike the Big Ten) and he's in fertile recruiting grounds. I think he'll be much more successful at Arizona than he was at Michigan, maybe not quite as successful as he was at WVU, but he should do well there.

Oh I will give you that about Malzahn having not been a head coach. That is going to be the proof in the pudding. However he is a much better hire based upon what he has brought already just in buzz and recruitment. No one thought Chizik was a good hire at Auburn but he has brought a 30-10 record with 3 bowl wins and a National Championship and 3 top ten recruiting classes. Everyone in the SBC should worry if Malzahn continues to recruit like he did this past season and if he can translate that offense to the Redwolves while being a head coach.

Of course, I look for some "lost paperwork" and too many extra work outs under any Rodriquez team.

I think the really impressive thing here is who would have ever expected a Sun Belt program to have their coach hired away after one season, for his hiring away by the new school to be considered the 10th best hire(out of 25) and for the guy the Sun Belt school replaced him with to be considered an even better hire?

For any school to have their coach hired away and then to replace him with a guy that is generally considered to be a better hire is impressive(though it happen twice on this list with Pittsburgh replacing Graham with Chryst) but for a school in the Sun Belt to do it is just ridiculous.

Is there anything more meaningless then a list ranking new coaching hires before we've even held a spring practice? Especially, when some of these guys have never been a college head coach before. I THINK Pelini will be successful (Malzahn too), but who knows?

I disagree perception, especially by the national media, is everything in athletics.

As many in the national media have stated, ASU made itself relevant in football by hiring Malzahn. Tangible results of the power of this perception were the #1 class in this past recruiting season.

Agree . . the perception of the SBC is changing for the better . . these two nationally ranked SBC football coaches are very important to the SBC as we move up the food chain.

Positive perception is great, but once games start it means nothing. I'm just saying that the idea that people can accurately compile a list ranking the best hires is silly before any of these guys have coached a game. Sure, it makes for something to talk about during the offseason, but ultimately, it's meaningless.
