ASU's Prez wants 8 team playoff
In short...

Crow's plan calls for the eight highest-ranked champions of the 11 BCS conferences to play in a single-elimination playoff, which the NCAA would operate.

After the playoff bracket is set, the bowls would invite teams not in the playoffs.

I like it that you have to win your conference to get into the playoff.

Something along these lines is what needs to be adopted. Boise State RUNS back to the WAC.

Bad thing is in theory the #2 team could have possibly not lost to any of the participants and infact defeated several of them yet still be left out.

However, the flip side is that it keeps the whole "every game counts" idea going...even though this year it didn't.

"Every game counts"...

I'd like 10 teams with the top 6 given a bye and the other 4 play an opening round. OR 12 teams with 4 given a bye. Depending on the number of conferences left.

What would that do for for the MACC game. 02-13-banana 02-13-banana

Maybe the MACC winner play the Big East winner in the opening round. 03-cloud9

RE: ASU's Prez wants 8 team playoff
FWIW, I have read the Big Ten is behind a proposal to have a 4 team playoff that is independent of bowl structure.

I guess having that playoff with 8 teams is the next step down the path to a playoff.

With CUSA-MWC merging that reduces the total number of conferences down to 10. I guess they could then take the top 7 conference champions and 1 at-large to protect an Alabama type school.

Eight or even 16 adds too many games. Top four is perfect, make those 3 games actual bowl games that rotate like the BCS title game currently does.

This is my preference.

Top 8 conference champs then the 4 highest ranked teams would be at-large teams.

Top 4 overall ranked teams would then get a first round bye.

Teams 5-8 would host the first round game at their home field 2 weeks after championship Saturday (giving a week off for finals).

This gives one or two little guys have a shot at the real prize while giving access for multiple bids by the super (money) power conferences.

No byes.

They'd already have an advantage being "ranked" a higher seed.

Stop feeding into that they "deserve" more. Playoffs are supposed to be about starting new on relatively even ground.

We are not going to win with that angle. If that is what we are pushing then they are just going to go for the 4 team playoff +1 format.

The only way we would have a shot is by patting them on the back as they let one or two of us in.

Not too sure about that. 4 slots would almost always be 2 sec leaving only 2 for the rest, including Notre Dame.

It will be at least 6, but that would require byes. So hang tough and demand at least 8 with no byes.

SEC and B1G are not going to let that happen...even with P12, B12, ACC, nBE, MWC/CUSA, MAC, SB & WAC all supporting it 100%.

That's part of why I think 16 will be the number, unless the power conferences secede. 16 means at worst you get 11 AQs, which still leaves 5 open slots. And right now you have how many power conferences?

The second season. Given the MAC's history NIU, CMU or Miami will sneak into the conference tourney and win the thing.

I think 16 may be a bit cumbersome, but the spirit is right on. In the name of "fairness" the number will have to be greater than the 4+1 that's being kicked around.
