PJ...I guess we hardly knew ye.

I don't know that it's totally fake. He could legitimately feel overmatched for where he's at in his career. And continuing to be a position coach, even in the NFL would reinforce that. The coordinator job is a lot of responsibility, and his comments before this one have said as much. Maybe he just sees himself as a WR coach right now.

I can remember a couple instances where high profile basketball coaches (Bobby Cremins?) took different jobs and just up and changed there minds shortly after being announced at their new jobs.

Sometimes weird stuff happens and what felt right in the moment doesn't feel right with a clear head.

if he truly felt being an OC was too much for him right now, then why did he interview for our Head Coach job last year?? i still call BS on that

Courtesy interview meets eyes too big for his stomach.

Screw worrying about our next HC. Let's get a good OC in here and move on. All this B.S. with the former Kaneland/NIU/49er/Rutgers guy doesn't change the fact we've had two great years and just signed a great class.

I'm excited as hell for spring practice and then kickin' some Hawkeye a** this fall!

That.. and the way he did it certainly doesn't look good to any mid major that may have wanted to hire him as a head coach. Why would you trust him to even stay a year or two? He's limiting his future chances with a move like this, unless he'd rather coach in the pro's and just doesn't care about college football (obviously, possible).

PJ is going the pro route and probably won't come back to NCAA football.

RE: P.J. resigns
As many of you have pointed out...the most painful aspect to deal with is the loyalty issue. Everyone on this board is NIU Huskie crazy, and in the end what we want in a coach is someone that feels as passionate about the team and university as we do. In most of our minds PJ fit that mold to a T. That is the most bitter pill to swallow.

On the positive side, I started a thread a few hours before this news blew up regarding PJ's inexperience. This could be a blessing in disguise. NIU was very fortunate to have an OC with the track record of Canada. PJ would have had a ton of growing pains next year. Maybe now, we can find an OC that can hit the ground running. PJ would have been an asset to this university, and I do feel a bit betrayed by the sudden turnaround, but I'll get over it, after all I went for pizza with the wife and kids tonight in my MAC championship tshirt.

That is pretty sad then, how old was Fitzgerald when he took over NU? Fleck should have been honest. This is such a puss answer to leave.

None of the above. Jim Zebrowski.
He would be a good choice too but then you have the whole Cole/QB coach Fris/WR coach thing that messes that up sort of.

To be a head coach at the non-AQ FBS level being an NFL positions coach is on the same level as an FBS OC or DC.

The recruits would rank a new HC with experience as aNFL positions coach higher than an OC or DC.

In this case he will be making 3X the money per year.

If he was just given the offer today then I have no problem with the timing.

However, he needs to release a statement asap clarifying everything otherwise this looks as bad as the Jerry gaff...I have nothing to say to you...

So you're saying our hire of Dave Doeren (an FBS DC), would have been equivalent to hiring a nfl positions coach?!

Here's a list of some current WR coaches in the NFL and their coaching highlights (if they have any, per wiki):

Bob Bicknell Offensive Coordinator Berlin/Cologne for 5 years
Chad O'Shea
Sanjay Lal
Jim Hostler SF 49ers O coordinator for 1 year
James Urban
Mike Wilson
Scottie Montgomery

That's just a few. The biggest names on the list are Ike Hilliard and Edgar Bennett.

I just got a text that said P.J. was completely overwhelmed and had no plan for the offense.

PJ should have waited until he got all options on the table then make a decision. Coach D should hire none of the above but who thinks is the right choice. Just because the above coached here doesn't mean a thing.

Well I am not ready for the pity party for PJ. A plan for an offense wasn't discussed during an interview?

Why did he accept the job?

He had no plan for an offense? Huh? What does that mean? This guy has done nothing but football for half his life. Toledo just hired a HEAD COACH at 32. I call bS.

I've never cared if it was a former player or not. But seeing P.J. at practice, listening to his players talk to him, and knowing his personality, he seemed like a perfect fit for head coach, or so I thought.
