4-star Penn State QB transferring to Temple
Will make Spring that much more interesting. Also had offers from Ohio State, Va Tech, and Michigan out of high school. Was 4th best dual-threat QB in the class of 2009 per Rivals.

He's more like a one-threat QB and it isn't his arm. Surprised he would transfer and it not be IAA so he could play right away.

RE: 4-star Penn State QB transferring to Temple
How much eligibility does he have left and when will he be eligible to play? Technically when transferring from one Division I school to another you have to sit out for a full year after you enroll at the new school. For instance, Jordan Haden transferred out of Floriday in August of 2010, but he did not enroll at Toledo until January of 2011 so he was not eligible for the fall of 2011 and the NCAA rejected his petition for immediate eligibility. So if Newsome just enrolled at Temple in January he will need to petition the NCAA for immediate eligibility in order to be able to play in the fall of 2012, and given past scenarios, not just the UT/Haden scenario, it is not likely to be granted.

If he is not given eligibility for the fall of 2012, I believe 2013 would be his last year of eligibility. If he does somehow get eligibility this fall then he should have two years of eligibility. However, it seems that Temple find a pretty good QB near the end of the season in Coyer. Will Newsome overtake Coyer for the starting job, and if he does would Coyer want to stay around as a 2nd teamer for two years and then only have one year of eligibility left himself? These are all interesting things that the Temple staff will need to consider here.

Sorry, should've posted the article too.

EDIT: for whatever reason, I'm not able to post the link to the article. It's on philly.com on the Sports page if you guys are interested.

He has two years left and it says can start immediately because he didn't play last year.

I don't see how he will be able to play in 2012 regardless of the fact he sat out 2011. He should have to be enrolled at the new school for one year before gaining eligibility to play.

Exactly, unless he petitions the NCAA and they allow it. They've been known to deny such requests in the past.

He left school long before the news of the Penn State scandal broke.

What was going on, was going on long before the "news breaking."

Oh boy, then you tell me how it directly effected him and forced him to transfer.

There have not been any sanctions to Penn State to warrant allowing players to transfer and play immediately, plus as Polish Hammer said he transferred out of Penn State before anyone knew anything publicly, so he does not qualify for anything from the current Penn State situation.

For what it's worth, Toledo and Jordan Haden thought the same thing last year. They were confident his petition to the NCAA would be accepted because he didn't player anywhere in 2010. The petition was denied.

A slight tangent:

Anyone think PSU's Robert Bolden (QB) will transfer?

He almost transferred last spring but JoePa wouldn't release him.

He may have been a 4 star recruit out of HS but doesn't necessarily translate to his college play. I wasn't too impressed with PSU's QB play the last few years and he didn't move too far in the system.

The real story just came out. Newsome transferred to a community college when he left Penn State and just signed with Temple as a JUCO. That is why he will be eligible right away this fall. He didn't transfer from a DI to a DI. He went to a JUCO in the fall.

As I understand it, he would have had to spend an entire academic year at a JUCO.

Can't play D-I ball in fall and then transfer to a JUCO for 2nd semester and then go D-I in fall at a different school.

That would be absurd.

In tax parlance, that would be considered a big 'loophole'... 03-melodramatic
