Wow...late in the game but then again the Rutgers coach was late in leaving. A little late in the game to affect the recruiting class so I imagine most (if not all) will stay committed but dang...spring ball is just around the corner.

Good luck FIU if this is true.

Timing sucks for them but I cant fault anyone for wanting to improve thier career and salary. These openings dont come up very often and when they do you have to jump on them.

Timing just sucks, but can't fault Rutgers for scrambling to replace their own coach who left them so close to NSD and can't really fault Cristobal for making the move to improve his career.

Yep. Timing sucks big time, and I hope we find the necessary resourceful people to make most of our very good recruiting class commitments tick.

I will forever be grateful for the hard work, tireless recruiting efforts, and overall positive demeanor instilled in our kids, our program, and the university. He took over a program in shambles and made it one of the top programs of the SBC in 4-5 years.

THANKS MARIO AND GOOD LUCK!

RE: Cristobal to Rutgers
Pretty sure its a done deal. Lots of reports now all over.

Big questions for FIU right now and not a lot of time (2 days) before they have to be answered.

I know FIU had one kid that was on the fence between Rutges, FIU, and WVU. He sractched Rutgers after Schiano left. I would imagine he would flip back to Rutgers with Cristobal there.

This will be an interesting hire for FIU. The 'Belt has really stepped it up in terms of coaching this year.

On another note, is this unprecedented in the history of the 'Belt that 2 coachs have moved UP to AQ confrence teams? I know people rag on this confrence, but it has to say something when people want your coachs and then you hire more than higer profile in return.

Crazy year in the 'Belt football.

Yeah...the level of coaching in the league has certainly gone up. I know no one is really high on Carl Pelini, but I think he will do great things at FAU.

Don't get me wrong, I buy into Malzahn as much as most, but right now your coaching change is still pending...

Also your situation wasn't nearly as screwy.

Was just on the FIU board and lots of "tweets" being posted that he is staying.

There's a whole lot of smoke for that to be true, but these days everyone sees one smoke signal and then passes it along until it looks like a lot.

Interesting to say the least.

Hold your horses sports fans....

Mario Cristobal turns down offer to become next Rutgers head football coach

Rutgers football was dealt its second stunning blow in four days when Florida International coach Mario Cristobal decided not to take the job as Greg Schiano's successor after it appeared it was just a matter of working out details today, according to two people familar with the situation.

Both people requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation.

That could leave interim coach Kyle Flood as next in line for the job, since he and Cristobal were the finalists.

Cristobal, 41, emerged as the leading candidate on Sunday, with his representative meeting with athletic director Tim Pernetti and Rutgers officials for a good part of the afternoon today, according to the two people. The meeting was essentially to work out details of a contract.

Cristobal, an assistant on Schiano's first Rutgers staff from 2001-2003, instead has opted to stay at FIU.

The first jolt to the Rutgers program happened on Thursday, when Schiano abruptly left to become head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after 11 seasons.

RE: Cristobal to Rutgers
Would you rather live in New Jersey or Florida? Work for a program that you've built from the ground up essentially or work for a program that has STUNK outside of the Greg Schiano era? I think Cristobal is smart staying put right now, lots of better jobs are going to be open next year with BC, Tennessee, and if Florida looks as bad as they did at times this year, the Gators job may come open. Muschamp is kind of a tool and obviously wasn't prepared for this job.
I'd also keep an eye on Georgia and Auburn, the Dawgs SEC schedule is as easy as it can be with no Arkansas, Alabama or LSU on it, so a bad year could see UGA pull the trigger.

Not just a raise, raises (to the entire football staff). And a few other things to help improve the program. With the student growth, there are more funds but this will soon have to be supplemented by ticket sales too.
