2012 SF Savon Goodman considering Memphis

Came across this today.

Hes been working on his grades after schools had backed off of him due to concerns he might need to re-classify to 2013.

Not sure if Memphis shares the same interest.

I'd love to add him in 2012.

Is this the same Savon Goodman who commited to Villinova back in November? If so, did he back off or the school back off due to grades?

From everything I've read he decomitted from Villanova because he wanted to go to UCLA. Not sure how this year's UCLA implosion may have affected that.

Quote:Basketball recruit says no to Villanova
August 29, 2011|BY MIKE KERN, kernm@phillynews.com

SAVON GOODMAN, a 6-6 senior forward who starred at Academy of the New Church, has decommitted from his verbal agreement to play for Villanova and also will be changing high schools.

Goodman was supposed to be part of a 2012 recruiting class that includes Ryan Arcidiacono, a 6-3 point guard from Neshaminy High School, and Daniel Ochefu, a 6-9 center from Westtown School in West Chester.

A top-50 recruit, Goodman played in Saturday night's BOOST Elite 24 game in Venice Beach, Calif., and could not be reached for comment. NCAA rules don't allow Wildcats coach Jay Wright to say anything until a recruit signs his national letter of intent, which couldn't have happened until November.

The situation has been described as "very complicated." There is no word on how much communication there's been between Goodman and Villanova of late. Goodman spoke with Wright last Monday to tell him the news.

ANC coach Kevin Givens also seemed to be on the outside looking in.

"I really can't confirm anything on the storyline," he acknowledged Saturday afternoon. "It's kind of unfortunate, not hearing anything. I just got a phone call from Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, but I've got a message to Villanova as we speak. I'm also trying to get through to Savon, and his aunt and uncle. They haven't told me they were planning on decommitting. So I'm just waiting to hear from those guys."

There's also been speculation that Goodman won't return to ANC this year because of his academic standing, and that he might not be able to start college until 2013 instead of 2012.

"We won't know until school starts sometime next week," Givens said. "But my thinking, and I can't confirm this, is that he will not be back.

"The reason is exactly what people have said, because of the academic approach that we have. That's a priority for us, so there may be something to that."

Rumor has it that Goodman is headed for Constitution, a budding force in the Public League.

When asked by text whether Goodman, who lives in Southwest Philly, is enrolled at Constitution, coach Rob Moore offered a one-word response: "Yes."

Villanova, which just had junior forward Isaiah Armwood transfer (to George Washington), is also reportedly in the mix for Amile Jefferson, a 6-8 senior power/wing forward from Friends Central. The word is that Goodman tried to convince Jefferson, who also played in the BOOST game, to listen to Villanova even though the Wildcats didn't have any scholarships available. That, of course, is no longer the case. Jefferson has visited North Carolina State, has scheduled a trip to Ohio State and is also planning another one to Connecticut. Temple, Maryland and Stanford are also recruiting him.

"[Villanova] is definitely a school that factors into my thoughts, being a hometown school," Jefferson told Comcast SportsNet New York. "Being able to recruit guys out of Philly has been great, so it's been really good so far . . .

"I'm still pretty wide open. We're still looking to see who else we're going to visit before we make a decision."

Ted Silary contributed to this report.

He may be UCLA's backup plan in case Shabazz decides to take the money and run (UK)

Haven't heard much from Savon since the decommitment. The consensus seemed to be he'd go to UCLA with Kyle Anderson, but not sure that's the case. Pretty certain we'd love to have him at Temple, since it looks like Amile Jefferson is going to Duke.

He's a 4 not a 3 and UCLA isn't apparently all that involved because of his grades. He's an undersized 4 so he could play with Shabazz in college but his grades are the problem.

Reports have UCLA trying to get back involved with Amile Jefferson but you have to assume they're too late. I would assume it means theyr'e not overly confident with Tony Parker.

LOL UCLA is far, far too late to get Amile. He's going to Duke.

Honestly, I think he'll go to NC State.

I heard both schools are in the "drivers seat" LOL.

Well with the recent development of Cal working his magic and making Nerlens Noel reclassify to 2012, I can understand why.

How come Temple wasn't in on Nurideen Lindsey as a transfer?

Seems like Dunphy doesn't really recruit a lot of Philly ballers to Temple, its a lot of basketball talent in that city.

Agreed but if we get the class we think we can get he wasn't going to be part of it.

no idea I'll wait and see but it sounds like talent won't be the issue at UCLA next year like it is this year.

Nuri is talented, but he's a total me-first player and Dunphy does not deal with that attitude. No one plays for Temple unless they play good defense. We also have a plethora of guards and wings and don't really need him. As far as recruiting goes, most of the top players from the area leave for schools like UNC, Duke, Kansas, Syracuse, etc. if they don't go to Nova. Our brand new practice facility should help us get a blue chip now and then.

To be honest, the talent actually in Philly isn't that good. The public school system is horrible and a lot of the kids don't qualify. Most of the talented kids are in the suburbs. Because of this, we've recruited NJ and FL a lot more, and finally started recruiting NY, getting Bronx stud F Daniel Dingle. Ramone Moore and Scootie Randall are from Philly. Khalif Wyatt and Rahlir Jefferson are from suburban Philly. TJ DiLeo is from South Jersey. Besides Dingle, we have a kid from Pittsburgh and a kid from Central Jersey (not far from NYC) coming in next year.

If Kentucky is "out of it" its because they have bigger priorities. The pecking order would be Noel, Bennett, Parker and then Jefferson.

No, they're out of it because Amile doesn't want to go to Kentucky.

That sounds a lot like Baltimore with the public school system producing nothing but guys who end up at Jucos because they cant qualify out of HS. Are the players in those suburbs originally from Philly and attended HS out of the city to be better prepared for college? Not sure the distances between those other towns and Philadelphia scrolling through the rosters of Temple & St.Joes.

Nurideen seemed like a game changer on the A-10 level, when it was reported he ended up at Rider it was kinda shocking. I would've thought one of those "Big 5/City 6" schools would've snatched him up when he transferred considering his talent level. Even if hes there for 1 year before going pro, he could probably make a real impact.

Well where Khalif and Rahlir are from isn't much better. Chester, where Rahlir is from is very, very dangerous and faces the same issues as those in Philly public schools. Fortunately, he comes from a very good family, and is a great person, student and player. We are trying very hard to keep his brother, Rondae, a national top 25 recruit in the class of 2013, home. Where Khalif is from is safer and more middle-class, but nothing too special. They're kinda suburbs in name only and are essentially Philadelphia. We also have WVU transfer Dalton Pepper who is from a wealthy suburb of Philly. In general, many Philly kids go to private or charter schools for the academic and athletic opportunities. Like I said, the inner city public school system is an absolute mess. SJU only has two players from the Philly area; CJ Aiken from suburban Philly and Daryus Quarles from South Jersey.

As far as Nuri goes, not a single City 6 school wanted him. He's not good enough to waste a scholarship for. LaSalle and St. Joe's have had issues with chemistry, and Bru doesn't tolerate players like that at Drexel. I dont think anyone wanted to mess with their team chemistry.
