Ohio University is a treasure of the state. There is a state historical marker now at Peden Stadium.

The latest news is that admissions are going through the roof and that Ohio is up to 24,000 undergraduate students. Out of state admissions doubled in the last year. The school is on pace for about 20,000 applications a new record.

Which is a sore point. That 20-13 loss in 2010 cost Ohio a division title.

I suppose it's fitting our state senate would celebrate mediocrity. Have they done this for one of our programs that actually wins championships?

Is all of this before Ohio's bowl victory? 03-lmfao

Seriously, is there a SPECIFIC reason for the heightened interest in Ohio?

Michigan's senate does this for the MAC champs, at least recently they have. CMU has been 3 times in the last several years, no EMU or WMU though!

Actually all it takes is a motion from that school's senator/representative to bring it to the floor for a vote. Not so much celebrating mediocrity, rather pandering to ones constituencies for votes.

Why isn't Ohio bigger than it is? You guys predate land grant schools by 50+ years. Couldn't Ohio pull strings in the legislature and
become a state school system like Wisconsin and Indiana?

Ohio does have several branch campuses already if that is what you are asking.

The plan is to push total campus enrollment (main, branch, online) to over 38,000 and I believe they are now up to 36,000 from 28,000 about 5 years ago.

They are working hard at increasing out-of-state students with 25% of the application pool out-of-state this year. That will drive up demand for in-state placement with fewer seats to offer.

This news is the first time in 15 years that Ohio has significantly increased its student profile. The school rocketed up in the 80's and early 90's and has since leveled off until these new initiatives.

They have been trying for 5 years or so very hard to improve the marketing of the school (which has always been a problem). The school is converting to semesters next season which is worth noting.

Those numbers listed on undergraduate enrollment are not correct. The total main campus enrollment was 21,000 last year. Main campus enrollment might be up to that 23,500 figure quoted in the paper for total enrollment.

Another article from another source says undergraduate enrollment for 2011-12 is flat at 17,133 from last year.

as with everything else with o$u, cheating.
Quote:-The Eagleson Bill: At the turn of the 20th century, the two previously founded universities in the state–Ohio University and Miami University–were enmeshed in a power struggle with a newcomer, Ohio State University, that was chartered in 1870 as the Ohio Mechanical and Agricultural College.

Of seminal importance during this period was Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes was a founder of Ohio State University as a governor, and after returning to Ohio after his one term as President of the United States, used his political influence to lobby on behalf of greater power for OSU. The debate came to a head in 1906 when a controversial bill handed the new kid on the block an advantage.

Despite heavy protest from the previously founded and more well-established state universities, the Eagleson Bill was passed. The bill mandated that only Ohio State among state universities was legally allowed to offer doctoral education or conduct basic research. The bill formally and legally locked in Ohio State’s status as the state’s leading institution and left the others to fight over scraps.

Even though the schools had similar enrollment, OSU was significantly handed the golden ticket to the Big Ten Conference six years later instead of the other major state competitors, Ohio and Miami.

“The Big Ten Conference is comprised of world-class academic institutions who share a common mission of research, graduate, professional and undergraduate teaching and public service,” says a mission statement on the conference’s website.

The Eagleson Bill meant that, through law, only OSU could meet the necessary criteria needed to enter the conference. The boost to one of the premier collegiate conferences put them on the path to success and left their rivals to join the less famous Mid-American Conference a few decades later.

Good find.

The state now allows doctoral programs but every school needs approval from the state legislature before starting any program.

The latest rules require that schools (outside of Ohio State) are only permitted to have graduate programs within their defined center of excellence, and almost exclusively those centers of excellence are scientific/research based. Liberal Arts doctoral programs have gone to the wayside (unless you are O$U of course).

Its sad that a public entity like O$U could impose rules for its own benefit against the other public universities. O$U can't stand the competition.

OU used to be A LOT bigger but the university sold land off piecemeal over the years.

There is a university system of Ohio coming as well as an "enterprise system" that I'm sure will do wonders for education in the state.
