Kaplan just needs some better talent as color for NIU games. Chimel and Waddle have been a little lackluster to say the least.
Waddle isn't with Comcast anymore, but I'm not sure how you could say that about him. Tommy knows football!
Oh definitely he knows football! I just dont think he added much to the broadcast pre-Chimel. It was nice to have the name recognition in the booth, but I just dont feel like he brought more than that.

I disagree completely, I thought he brought a lot.

So I know Mr. Kaplan is a Chicago radio host and a color analyst for ESPN amongst many other duties but when they referred to him as 'coach' the other day, it raised my eyebrows. A search said he coached at Northern Illinois University. Obviously not a head coach as another search revealed. Did he indeed coach at NIU and what time period was this?
Thanks!!
Kaplan was an assistant basketball coach in the mid-80's under John MacDougal, particularly the Kenny Battle years.
He was a good recruiter, and a good talent evaluator and still respects NIU.
Yeah, unfortunately he's also a Paterno apologist but most of the time I enjoy listening to Kap.

He didnt really know who any of the players were, did not really analyze anything football related in depth. It was kind of just meathead analysis like "THAT GUY IS TOUGH". You could tell he did not really want to be there, which I dont blame him, he has no NIU connections.

The ESPN guys don't do any of that either. But Waddle was at least respectful of teams he was announcing for (and talked about the game he was announcing instead of the game between BCS teams sometime the following year), and had good insight from experience playing on Sundays.
