NC needs a new beacon of light
This is actually something I've always wanted us to do:
( I always thought it would kick ass addition to the football stadium as the Hill seems the highest point in Greenville. Imagine it having a purple light.)

Quote:Was thinking about landmarks at ECU....wonder if we could get grassroots effort to build a legacy monument on the main campus. I love the Fountain
and the Cupola, but I'm not a big fan of the Library clocktower. I
couldnt think of any others.

I was thinking about making a real statement. How about, in the
green space between the Student Rec center, Mendenhall (or the new
student center), Greene Residence Hall, Mamie Jenkins Building and
Old Cafeteria....we construct a tall (unpainted) brick Lighthouse.
Hatteras LH is about 200 feet tall, I'm thinking go about 190 ft.
(UNC's Bell Tower is 172). Have a light in it that could shine
purple or gold. The base could utilize our three arch design on
each side.

For some this may sound crazy, but consider it could be a permanent
symbol of the East and ECU and of the Pirate Spirit....it could be
able to be climbed and would give views to the Medical complex to
the west, the athletic complex to the South and in the future the
Downtown ECU buildings to the North. It also may be tall enough to
look East toward Washington down river. Greene Dorm is currently
about 111 feet.

MOST big time Colleges have structures like this. Duke has its
Chapel, which is 210 feet tall. NC State has a belltower that is
115 feet tall.

Is this something anyone has ever considered and do we think there
would be support for it if funding could be raised...it may take 5-
10 years to raise funds, but it would be a legacy symbol of ECU and
its standing in the East. It would help separate ECU from the
big "commuter schools".

I second that idea and don't think fundraising would be an issue at all.

I always liked the idea of a large flagpole, with the colors visible from anywhere in Greenville (especially from inside Dowdy Ficklen). On gamdays, hoist the "world's largest jolly roger". Maybe fly one at half-staff when a legendary ECU figure passes as a tribute. I'd imagine seeing something like this, approaching Greenville on a fall Saturday morning, heading east on 264:

Thats a Great Idea Too WilsonPirate! - A former PiKapp had a real big jolly roger (flew it at Libby Hill Seafood on gamedays) but unfortunately that venture didn't pan out well for him.
