UMass got verbal commitment at the expense of one of its MAC rivals
ANOTHER VERBAL COMMITMENT - UMass got another verbal commitment at the expense of one of its Mid-American Conference rivals. Tajae Sharpe, a wide receiver from Piscatway, N.J., committed to the Minutemen after visiting UMass this weekend. The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder had previously committed to Kent State.

Sharpe holds offers from Kent State, Pittsburgh, Temple, Towson and Villanova.

He also had an offer from Akron. Good pickup.

I suspect UMass will recruit well going forward.

It is an excellent school, will play an attractive schedule, and play games in the Patriots stadium.

Also, apparently wants to play a wide open offense.

I assume they will recruit well in New England and along the East Coast.

Sweet? Great way to get started in the conference targeting commits to other schools instead of getting your own.

RE: UMass got verbal commitment at the expense of one of its MAC rivals
UMass didn't really have an opportunity to introduce itself to any of these kids until the past few weeks, so our coaches aren't crossing any players off the list even if they've verbally committed elsewhere. If we're still raiding our neighbors' cupboards next year, then we're probably just jerks. Unfortunately, the outgoing coaches didn't think they'd be retained so they left the cupboard empty. Plus the previous year LOI passed before we made our FBS announcement, so we didn't get any recruits from that. Basically, our entire recruiting season for our first ever FBS season will be the 6 weeks between the hiring of Molnar and national letter of intent day on Feb 1. I won't be shocked if we're at or near the back of the MAC when the websites start comparing recruiting classes, even with the handful of players we got to de-commit from elsewhere.

Who cares if we are raiding other schools, its done throughout college football all the time. The SEC, PAC 10, ACC do it to each other all the time.. STOP 03-hissyfit03-weeping03-weeping

You should not worry about, everyone does it. We do our share of it and given the chance on someone we would like, we will do it again. A verbal is just that, a stinking verbal at a point in time.

So should we go ahead and give back the Miami QB recruit we swooped up recently? Relax, these things happen. Congrats to the UMass coaching staff.

Question for the Minutemen fans, I remember when UMASS won their last FCS title that a good sized contingent of Minutemen were from California. Do you anticipate that your current staff will continue to recruit in California (especially at the skilled positions) or scale back on the West COast and try to get those types of players from Florida and the southeast?

That's not really the case, we don't recruit California much. We mainly go there looking for pro style quarterbacks, particularly in the JUCO system, and then every once in awhile the target QB or his JUCO coach points us towards a player at another position. Our last 2 teams to make it to the FCS Championship only had 1 or 2 Californians on them, but they tend to stand out because they're often the starting QB. I reckon we'll try to keep the positive relationships we've built with the CA JUCOs, but I don't think we have a plan to expand our operations there, excluding of course when we hire a coach who also happens to have great recruiting ties to that area. Short of that, Coach Molnar has publicly stated that he wants this to be a New England/Northeast team.
