I tried to hunt but for whatever reason the NCAA database is down.

I have taken a look at the numbers for OU through the years before and in the late 70's believe it or not OU only averaged 3,000 a game. That was coming at a time of overall decline for the university and total enrollment was 12,000.

Toledo was the kings of men's basketball attendance from the late 70's on into about 1984 averaging about 8,000 a year.

Ohio began to take off in attendance in 1982 under Danny Nee who brought the average close to 5,500. Ohio's attendance was about 5,000 range until popular coach Larry Hunter came and numbers gradually swelled to 7,500 by the time of Shaq of the MAC. Numbers stayed high until Tim O'shea's 3rd or 4th season where interest in the program declined to around 4,500.

Attendance Leaders Recap:

late 70's-early 80's (Toledo)
mid 80's (Ohio)
late 80's-early 90's (Ball State)
mid 90's to today (Ohio)

Ohio was ranked #82 in total attendance last year with 106,000 fans visiting the Convocation Center.

Except your attendance leaders recap isn't really accurate. I pulled out only current MAC members, so if Marshall won a year, it wouldn't be reflected:

MAC attendance leaders per game:
1978 Toledo - 7,034
1979 Toledo - 7,514
1980 Toledo - 8,190
1981 Toledo - 9,178
1982 Toledo - 8,862
1983 Toledo - 8,308
1984 Toledo - 8,337
1985 Toledo - 7,854
1986 Toledo - 7,344
1987 Toledo - 6,269
1988 Toledo - 6,674
1989 Toledo - 6,394
1990 Toledo - 6,415
1991 Ball State - 6,377
1992 Ball State - 7,734
1993 Ball State - 6,644
1994 Ball State - 7,088
1995 Ohio - 7,562
1996 Ohio - 7,167
1997 Ohio - 7,427
1998 Ball State - 7,407
1999 Miami - 6,401
2000 Ohio - 7,474

2002 Ohio - 7,145
2003 Ohio - 6,175
2004 Toledo - 5,292
2005 Ball State - 5,640

2008 Ohio - 5,135
2009 Toledo - 5,610
2010 Ohio - 5,289
2011 Ohio - 5,599

So getting back to your original question exCincy, 10 times in 34 years.

Last night's attendance: 4,638. Crowd size, she is a fickle mistress.

It didn't even look like that on STO.

=>My one experience at the Convo last year taught me that OU greatly inflates attendance numbers. OU reported just under 10k last year for the game vs. Miami. If the Convocation Center sits 13k, then no way had 10k. Half of the upper bowl, where the majority of the seats reside, was empty and in the upper bowl areas where people like myself were sitting, there was room to put your feet on the seat in front of you, your coat on the seat to the left, and elbow room to slouch on the right.

I don't disagree with you Mollautt that attendance is inflated at most games based on butts in seats. Paid attendance is counted, and not every person makes it to the building on game day. Because some of our season ticket holders are in cities like Columbus, the weekday games tend to have less butts in seats vs. paid attendance.

But I was at the Miami game last year, and from my vantage point, that was as close to an accurate count as you will get, as their weren't many no shows. It looked close to 10k to me. So I'm respectfully disagree.

No way there was 4,638 last night.

Thanks for tracking down that attendance info, Bobcat95! Toledo sure had quite a run at leading the MAC in hoops attendance in 70's and 80's..if you go back further I suspect they led most of the years prior to 1978 as well. I didn't realize we (Miami) snuck in one year of leading the conference in attendance..that was our sweet 16 team with Wally S.

We went over this last year. You were incorrect in your insistence the upper bowl was half empty then, too. The layout of the seats can be deceptive when trying to figure out how many people are in the building.

But even taking your story: Lower bowl seats 4,000. Upper bowl seats 9,000. A half-full upper bowl means 8,500, which is not greatly inflated from the announce attendance of 9,749.
