I always hated this guy! The coach before him at X (Stack?) was a good guy and a good coach. Prosser, after him, was a better guy and a great coach that I still truly respect. Matta wasn’t around long enough to have an opinion of, although I do see his recruiting classes are performing quite ‘remarkably’ this year. The newest X coach seems like a good guy, or maybe he just looks like a deer in the headlights.
But I ALWAYS hated Gillen. He was ALWAYS an A-hole. Huggins tried on several occasions to buddy up to Gillen, and Gillen always acted like an A-hole. And finally Huggins decided to snub him after that game, and you know what, Gillen decided to leave! Hurray!
And now Gillen is being drilled by NC as well as the rest of the conference. Good! I’ll bet this is his last year in the ACC...

Yep, Gillen was an a** when he coaches at Xavier.
Add Bill Self to the list of arrogant a**wipes that I can't stand. His comments after Tulsa beat us (minus Kenyon) is one of the most classless things I've seen a coach say or do.

Maybe Self and Weber can knock one out of the NCAA Tournament and then the other one gets knocked out the next round. That would be my dream! Meanwhile I won't have to worry about that with Pete Gillen. When you have guys on ESPN saying that he needs to rally the troops to make a late run at an NIT berth you know you're already fired.

the fact that bobby gonzalez reportedly grabbed his crotch and gestured down to the uc bench during one of the timeouts didn't help things either.
gillen's high water mark as a coach was probably either in 1990 when he took xavier to the sweet sixteen, 1997 at providence when after an unimpressive season, he took providence to the elite eight. he was aided by some big upsets that collapsed the bracket though. or february of the 2001 season when he had virginia ranked #5 in the country and tied for first in the acc. after that, he collapsed entirely, backed into the ncaa tournament, and lost in the first round. they haven't really been the same since.

Aw man I remember that year. I was 10 or 11 and I didn't know much about basketball. I had Virginia as a 5 seed and Iowa St. as a 2 seed meeting in the championship game of my bracket. Of course they both lost in the first round :D

That in itself should be enough to cause you to fall on your sword.

i've never met gillen or gonzalez, but from what i've heard gonzalez is ten times the jerk gillen is. the miami fl job was all but his this year, but from what i've heard he was such an egosentrical (spell??) jack****** that they retracted their offer. that isn't the first time that's happened to him, which is why he's still at manhattan.
as far as gillen goes, i don't like his style of play. you have to have very exceptional players to run and gun like they do and have it be completely effective. there are probably only two or three teams that can do that and have a ton of success with it, and even then i can only think of one team that won the national championship doing that and that's kentucky in 1996. more times than not, it kills you as much as it helps you and i think he's realizing that now.
