Coaches Luncheon next Tuesday, January 17th
The first Coaches Luncheon for the New Year will be next Tuesday, January 17, 2012. It will be held in the Legends Room of the Jack Stephens Center. Both Coach Joe Foley and Coach Steve Shields will be speaking and each has been requested to bring one of their players.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 and the coaches will begin speaking at 12:00. The cost this year is $10 for Tip-In Members and $15 for non-members. We are in the early part of the Conference Season and things are getting exciting. Show your support and see you at the luncheon.

If you currently plan to attend you are requested to provide a no obligation RSVP to Sheena Howell at smhowell1@ualr.edu for food planning purposes only.

Remember Coaches luncheon tomorrow with lunch at 11:30 and Coaches Shields and Foley to speak at noon. They have been asked to bring some players. The men are in first place and the women are tied for second. Good time to hear from the coaches.

Insideualr, Outsideualr, MJS, Jim Tripcony, LRTrojan - It would be great to see you there tomorrow. Hope most of you can make it. I'm not sure I have met the rest of the locals on the board face to face but if you can make it please do. You will have the chance to ask the Coaches anything.

I intend to be there unless the judge unexpectedly holds me up. Happens sometimes, but I don't expect to be delayed tomorrow.

It went great!

On the Women's side. Coach Foley Spoke and brought Britteni Williams. Britteni is an excellent speaker.

On the Men's side Coach Shield's Spoke as did Coach Lee, Coach Cunningham and Coach Kleine. Will Neighbour was the Student athlete speaker for the mens side.

MJS, Outsideualr, PTJR and Jim Tripcony were there and maybe can give you some of the meat of the discussions

I ask coach Shields about the OOC schedule to see if any of this years had any return dates for next year. I believe he said all of the contracts had expired except Tulsa, who will be returning to the Jack next year. He also said they were looking into renewing the ORU contract.

Coach said he felt the fans would most like for them to Schedule a road game or two with teams like Michigan State or Kentucky and get some quality games like this year back in the Jack.

Coach Kleine did a funny bit about a team being "fortunate" and "unfortunate" and about when a 70 foot shot to end a game is "great coaching"

Coach Shields was asked about why some players did not follow their shots for offensive rebounds. He said he expected the 1 and 2 to be getting back to protect against the fast break. It was the 3, 4, & 5's job to rebound on the offensive end.

Exactly. Which is why I wonder why Dre frequently has so many rebounds.

Most of Dre's rebounds are on the defensive in. He has 65 defensive rebounds and only 9 offensive. He has to get back after a shot on the offensive end.

Per Coach Shields most of our players were not available for our summer conditioning last summer. (Some were finishing up their grades, two were having hernia surgery, Gus was injured, Michael was waiting to be cleared by NCAA and Will was playing ball for one of Englands national teams. He expects everyone will be here for summer conditioning this year.

Will was asked if he has gained any weight since he has been here and he said he had and would continue to put it on. I can't remember how much he said he had put on but somewhere around 10 to 15 pounds? (maybe one of the others in attendence can remember)

Will was asked about this injury at the end of the Denver game. I believe he said the other guy was just going for the rebound and it was a clean play by the other player when Will got injured.

That is a valid point, but it is a double-edged sword. Guards release on the offensive end to guard against the break, but they also have to release on the defensive end to get the break going. However, without a dominant rebounder, that is harder to do. We had one when JJ was here, but never did develop it into a consistent break.

Remember jj would rebound the ball and throw it to the other team, repeat defense, re bound again and get it to a guard, so those 20 rebounds were like 10.

I don't remember how good Joe was on the outlet pass, but if he wasn't, he had to have played against a lot who were, so he ought to know how it should be done. If we ever do get a real rebounder in here, I hope we learn to run the classic break, a la Willis Reed or Wes Unseld.

To run the break, the perimeter players have to release as soon as possible and be confident that the big guys will take care of the rebounding.
