USC-Upstate and Wofford...stupid
As you may or may not know, USC Upstate shares Spartanburg with Wofford College of the Southern Conference. The potential is there for a great rivalry that would benefit both schools' pocket books, but WOFFORD WILL NOT SCHEDULE US! Yes, we played them last year for the first time since 1987, but that was set up by a third party as part of a tournament in Charleston. The reason, supposedly, for Wofford's snub is an incident in 1987 where a game between the two schools got chippy and then USCS coach Jerry Waters allegedly refused to shake then Wofford coach Richard Johnson's hand after the game. Richard Johnson, who is now the Wofford AD has held a 20+ year grudge. I also think Wofford, who arrogantly (and mistakenly) envisions themselves as "the Harvard of the South," looks down their noses at Upstate and wishes we would just go away. Never mind that they will play other A-Sun schools, like Jacksonville this year, and that several schools in the Southern have lower academic standards than Upstate! The whole thing is dumb.

PS- And if anything ever happened to the A-Sun and Upstate needed another conference, we'd be in trouble as Wofford would fight tooth and nail to keep us out of the Southern, and the Big South wants football schools, which Upstate will never be.

If that's their reason they need to let it go!! It makes perfect sense to schedule that game. the RPI's are nearly even right now too.

We'd even let Wofford have the game at their arena every year, at least as long as we're in the Hodge Center. The reason for that is that their arena seats 3500, while Hodge seats just 1500. I guarantee you that the game would draw at least 2500 fans and maybe over 3000 some years. The schools are only 3.6 miles apart- its time to do this thing! Give the city of Spartanburg a great rivalry!

I completely agree. Would even consider a home-and-home every season to really cut down on travel expense and try to build the rivalry. Your arena seats 1500??? I thought it looked like less than that. That's not bad for the size they had to work with.

I also wonder why the annual game with Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC (about 30 miles away) was stopped. For a school like Upstate that has major trouble getting nonconference D-1 home games, PC is a school that would probably be willing to come to Hodge. And it would help on those travel expenses too. How about Winthrop in Rock Hill? Gardner-Webb? SC State? Why not bring one of these in instead of a second game with Texas Pan Am? I think many teams as a whole could all schedule smarter...I realize that small conference teams need a number of "money" games at the major conference schools, but there are still improvements that could be made if teams' officials would sit down and talk things out via phone or even e-mail.

You bring up an interesting topic as ETSU fans are constantly aggravated about our scheduling. For Upstate, your problem is you haven't won yet so teams don't want to look stupid going to Hodge. Win some games and show your competitive, it'll help.
As for lower-mid major conference scheduling, there's reason in the world why the OVC, Big South, A-Sun and Southern Conference don't have a scheduling arrangement between the four to fill out each others' non-conference slate. Based on geography, it's just silly that they don't. Schedule the teams top vs. top, bottom vs. bottom based on the previous season and put teams on rotations.

RE: USC-Upstate and Wofford...stupid
*gasp*

Another USC Upstate fan? I'm a USC-U alumni.

I think long term Upstate will field a football program. In fact, long term I think Upstate will leave the USC system and be its own public stand alone. Keep in mind USCS became USC Upstate because they wanted a post-graduate nursing program. The Upstate nursing program is already the best in the state and better than the one in Columbia. Columbia said no to the post-graduate nursing program, and Upstate was going to go ahead with it anyway. Columbia came down hard and told USCS to fall in line across all curriculum immediately or lose all state funding. USCS fell and line and rebranded into Upstate.

Back to the original point, Upstate will surpass Wofford purely for financial and growth reasons. Upstate's enrollment has exploded the last 10 years. I think they've doubled enrollment twice in that time span. Meanwhile Wofford is still a one city block bleedingly expensive private. The long term prospectus for Wofford compared to Upstate isn't good.

Lastly, I'm still pissed off my class ring has a damned chicken on it instead of a Spartan. And I'm still pissed the alumni association sends me an email any time the chickens fart athletically.

Hodge is still far too embarrassing to go to, even for small guys, and even after the renovation. It is better than it was by alot from when they were NAIA... but man it is still ghetto bush league compared to the competition. If the Athletic Department had a brain they would have created a new proper purpose-built facility on North Campus Blvd with all the other athletic facilities. There is plenty of space. Plus Math and Computer Science desperately need to redo all of Hodge to get more space and more proper space utilization. I think they had to convert athletics department offices downstairs into the robotics lab, since the automotive robotics from Staubli are too heavy to go on the 2nd floor with all the labs and classrooms. Ask Professor Van Delden about that clustereff if you want a chuckle.

Capacity 818. That just aint gonna cut it. Compare that to the people who you want to come to Hodge and their facilities:

Wofford ... capacity 3,500

Winthrop ... capacity 6,100

SC State ... capacity 3,200

Even lowly Presbyterian ... capacity 2,500

For bonus points ... Furman ... capacity 5,000

Wow, 818?! I suspected that 1500 figure they give was an overstatement! An arena that seats under 1000 fans is an absolute joke and embarrassment for a Division 1 program! They need to build a new arena as you decribed it there on North Campus Blvd. ASAP!

Wofford only averages 979 a game this year. They have nothing to argue with.

When Upstate went D1 in 2007 they had renderings online of a brand new convocation center along the lines of Mercer and Campbell's new arenas. Those plans seem to have quietly disappeared a few years ago. Anybody know anything about that?

Yeah...they don't have the funding. So they renovated their current facility.
