ULL Beats WKU With 6 Men On Court
The Rajun Cajuns at WKU game tonight went into overtime. The game was tied with about 20 seconds to go with ULL inbounding the ball. They dribbled the ball around and then scored a layup with 3 seconds to go to take a 2 point lead. WKU missed a desperation heave at the buzzer. ULL wins.

But the TV replay clearly showed that ULL had six men on the Court on the last play. We're not talking about a guy on the sideline with a foot on the court or something, we're talking about six guys playing. Clearly the ULL basket should have been disallowed and WKU awarded technical free throws with a chance to win the game. But the refs, even though they apparently knew something was wrong, just huddled after the game, then just headed to the locker room.

Another example of that fine SBC officiating we so know and love. If the officials can't count to six on the final play, what are they doing being refs in Division I?

I'm actually somewhat surprised that the refs generally catch "12 men on the field" in football. That's a little harder with 22 players, ref, linesmen, etc. Counting to 6 shouldn't be that hard.

Jeff has a photo on BTH. Hard to make it out since I couldn't figure out how to enlarge it. I would have thought the WKU fans would have rioted. Or do they have any fans with their 5-12 record, or whatever it is now. Their fans aren't used to that.

Supervisor of referees ought to have their jobs for that one.

If I am the coach of ull, I forfeit. We won the wrong way.

The league needs to intervene.

Don't hold your breath while waiting for that to happen.

What the heck does Waters mean by this-

Waters said. "Coaches are on the court, too. If the official had stopped it then it upsets the flow of the final seconds of the game.

They should have stopped it and called a technical foul against ULL. WKU then wins the game. Sucks because that win may end up really big for ULL in Western Division by the time the season is over.

Mike Wood is full of crap. According to statsheet.com Brad Gaston has worked only 298 games since 1997. Reinaldo Acosta has worked 7 since 1997. Roger Ayers has worked 762 since 1997. I would not call that a veteran crew.

Ayers is a vet, working mostly ACC and Big East. Brad works mostly Horizon and Mo. Valley.

That's over 1000 games between them. Anybody but Wooden coached that many games? Not exactly rookies. Still a pee wee league ref should be able to count to 6.

No, a veteran crew would have 2,000 games between them. Unfortunately the SBC doesn't get that. Only the top conferences get that. The SBC is lucky to get an official with 700 or 800 games under his belt.

When Waters says you don't want to mess up the flow of the game he might be talking about letting the players decide the game on the floor and not the refs. I have seen UALR lose a couple of close games when a ref called a foul against UALR sending the opponent to the free throw line where he hits both free throws with 2 or 3 seconds left to earn the win. I want to see the players decide the game. If a player commits a tickytac foul and does not gain a clear advantage over the player he fouled, then let them play. WKU was clearly at a disadvantage playing 5 on 6.
I can't believe the official scorer did not catch that. I wonder if McDonald saw 6 players. I have seen techs called with 6 players on the floor. It is hard to hide 6 players on the floor. If McDonald saw it he should have run onto the floor to get the refs attention.
What is even harder to believe is with 6 players ULL did not have a wide open player under the basket.

The wku player at the basket knew something was wrong. He is looking all around be things are happening fast.

ull needs to forfeit or the league needs to make it a no contest.

RE: ULL Beats WKU With 6 Men On Court
Unfortunately the game is over and nothing can be done but suspend the officials. Big deal that is because Ayers could easily not work another SBC game all season. He can just work ACC, Big East and SEC. Gaston can always work Horizon or the Valley. Renaldo, who has worked just 7 games will have a tough time getting another gig this year.

If, for some reason, the clock had stopped during that cluster dust something could have been done. A ref might not be able to review a play to see how many players are on the floor, but they can check the monitor to reset the clock, then count the players on the floor, then call the tech and take the points off.
