Basketball, as in many things in life is rife with contradictions and, on occasion, a paradox or two. Example:

All coaches want players who are fast. They want guys who can run down the floor, quick hands, quick feet, quick at jumping, etc.

However, one of the things that coaches yell quite often at a player on the floor is, "Slow down!" More often than not, it is the younger guys who are told to slow down. It is with experience that an older guy will know when to slow down and when not to.

Just because one pounds it in the post it does not necessarily mean that the play has to be over quickly. The guys with experience will certainly pound it in there; however, they take their time to make sure everything is going right.

The paradox -- coaches want someone who is young and fast, but what they really want is someone who knows how best to play the game and sometimes the best way is slow and methodical.
