RE: MAC Tourney If Today (01/03/12)
This really puts a premium on inter-divisional play on both sides, but nice advantage for a West team if it can dominate its division and the East beats each other up at the top.

Pomeroy currently projects KSU, OU, UB and Akron to all finish at 11-5. Can a West team match that or do better is an interesting question? The likelihood is that one or two of the East teams may do better than 11-5, though.

Can KSU continue its dominance of the West? That could play a big role also as the other East teams have faltered vs. the West at least once or twice per season. KSU is riding a 24-game streak over West teams dating back to Feb. 2008. That has been a key in KSU's success in the East standings, to gain ground during inter-divisional play.

The next two months are my favorite time of the year. Some many questions, so few answers...

Every East team has some big question marks entering play Saturday, and the West looks like a 3-team race.

This is why I think the MAC should redesign the conference in a Zipper format with UMass coming into the conference next year for football.

Place UMass and Temple in different divisions so 12 core members will play in the same football and basketball divisions and just add 1 additional member for football to each side.

Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Kent State, Akron, Buffalo, UMass*

Northern Illinois, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Miami, Ohio, Temple*

At least for basketball the two divisions would be nicely balanced. In football its a different story with NIU, Toledo, Temple, Ohio all in the same division though Temple may not be staying so that changes the equation somewhat.

The only crossovers I would keep in football are BG-Toledo, CMU-EMU and Temple-UMass. Temple should be playing Buffalo every year but I want to keep Buffalo in the Kent State/Akron division because of travel.
