UCONN lands WR Bryce McNeal
The coaching staff is doing a complete makeup on UCONN's passing game. UCONN just landed WR Bryce McNeal who is eligible to play in 2012. He graduated in 3 years from Clemson. For those people that care about recruiting stars, he was a 4 star recruit ranked #10 WR in 2009.

So far, UCONN has landed JUCO QB Chandler Whitmere (former Illinois commit) along with McNeal. UCONN also has Shakim Phillips (another former 4 star recruit from BCU) at WR for next year along with returning of Michael Smith. I have no idea what this means for our passing game, but this will be a complete makeover from the Edsall era.

Not sure I agree with that as a blanket statement. They matter to at least some extent. They are not a perfect predictor of success (or lack thereof), but they are "right" more than they are "wrong".

While there are plenty of examples of "stars not mattering", we consistently see the top teams in the country land the top recruiting classes. When my team gets a new verbal I typically look to 2 things: stars and other offers......and I probably put a little more weight on other offers....but stars do matter at some level.

We also have QB Casey Cochrane from Monroe. I've never seen him play, but from what I've heard, he's solid. Our best in-state recruit since Orlovsky in 2000.

The only thing we've been missing since 2004 is a passing game. Everything else has been in place. If we can throw the ball downfield, we have a good chance of reaching the Top 25 (as long as something else doesn't fall apart).

In general higher rated HS players become better players in college, as an average. Obviously there are always exceptions but in general the higher the rating the more likely they are to be good.

That said, the companies that make these star ratings just rate them based on the schools offering them with some slight deviation

The kid was productive at Clemson, but was beat out by slightly better players. He will still make an impact here and I am thrilled with this pick-up.

I believe Cuban was taking a shot at SF's normal stance on recruiting rankings.

College players, just like in the pro's, a new situation and/or program can make all the difference in the world in regards to production.

Here's McNeal's stats from his year's at Clemson:

2009: DNP, Redshirt
2010: 19 catches, 187 yds, 11 games played with 3 starts
2011: 1 catch, 8 yds; Played in the first 3 games in '11 with 1 start

Bryce left the Clemson football program (but stayed in school to graduate) after the 3rd game this past season:

You are right, they don't matter. USF already proved year in and year out those FLA recruiting stars mean nothing when it comes to performance on the field. UCONN also has done fine with the lowest ranked recruiting classes over the years.

I am more interested how well this new coaching staff evaluate talent right now.

In the 1990's, I believe ND never had a recruiting class out of the Top 10 and Nebraska never had a recruiting class in the Top 10. Nebraska won 3 NC's and ND won none.

Stars are nice. They are not essential.

With addition of McNeal, UCONN has added 2 former 4 star WRs and 1 4 star QB. Next year we will find out if they are busts or live up to their recruiting rankings.
