[split] Rice BOT approves $44m EZF/improvements to Rice Stadium
44 mill is not that far from what it cost SMU or UCF to build their stadiums.

With UH building a new venue next year, Rice fans may want to pay close attention to the affect a new stadium has on fan interest as well as perceived commitment to athletics.

Looking at that RICE OWLS tarp over the seats in the end zone of old Rice Stadium screams 'small time'.

I surely hope it's more "improvement" than "expansion", because the latter is the last thing that Rice needs.

Just a guess here ... but my gut tells me that the gap between the $44mm (for this project) and the all-in construction cost of a new facility are greater than you might think. Given that there is money to be raised for the project ... even an additional 50% ($20-$25mm) would become a significant deal.

UCF went the cheap route and built their stadium for $55 Million. I can understand not wanting to build a metal structured stadium though. Congrats to Rice. Hope it goes well.

Yeah...well its not like you guys are packing the fans in either. You have no room to talk. You currently play in a refurbished high school stadium. Why not just give Rice some props instead of trying to degrade them? Just because you are going to the Big East doesn't mean sh!t.

Well, nobody at Rice has used the word expansion. Not sure why you are, except to be a dick. This is aptly described as improvement and upgrade.

Coogs sounding a lot like the TCU guys when they went to MWC. All of a sudden their poop doesn't stink. Look, congrats on the move to the BE. I am genuinely envious of the efforts you all made to get the invite and disappointed my administration didn't figure this out sooner. But really, you're going to bust Rice's chops about attendance?

I wasn't degrading anyone, rather stating some facts that few would argue. If you average ~15k, and currently have a 45k+ stadium, would you put expansion as a priority? Hell no.

Kudos to Rice for putting money into Rice Stadium to improve it. I've been to 3 or 4 games there, and always thought it was really nice. Just needed a little work.

Yeah what a dumb idea. We should have spent $300 mil on a set of bleachers that people stand/sit in for 24 hours a year.

MU nailed it RE UCF. And SMU built their stadium 12 years ago. The Dynamo are looking at $77MM for their 22,000 seat stadium.

Duly noted. I'm clearly getting defensive.

But I'm sure you were a dick to Rice fans elsewhere so the point stands. 03-razz

Nobody's hatin.

Going old versus building new is a debate that we all have.

As a proponent of rebuilding, I'm just not sure that putting in new toilets is going to stir up excitement among the fanbase. For that amount of money, it should be a STATEMENT about your VISION for a brighter FUTURE. The present plan should be good for a couple of retrospective articles in the local paper as it seems to be rooted in SWC nostalgia and JFK.

Edit: You may want to pay closer attention to what happens at UNT. I think their Krispy Kreme Stadium will prove to be an attention grabber as more realignment takes shape.

Well considering they are building a facility that would count as expansion. Not all expansions mean more seats. You certainly have come off a bit trollish in this thread. Of course BEhomerdou*he did, but that's his act, I usually expect you to be a little better than that.

Let's put it this way: If Rice Stadium was built TODAY, as it's currently configured but with infrastructure upgrades like electrical (for concessions), plumbing, pressbox, and the now-approved EZF, it would be one of the finest stadia in the country.

I'm sure you're correct and it is a classic structure.

I'm anxious to see the finished product and how extensive the changes will be.

I think TCU did a great refurbishing of ACS. Of course they poured a lot more money into it but it retained much of its classic appeal while having its look transformed, in large part by their taking down the second deck.

I give them props. Their timing couldn't have been better. The modern Amon Carter Stadium looks befitting of a BCS conference team and the EXTENSIVE renovation undoubtedly played a big role in landing the AQ invites.

You do know this is a C-USA board, so when do you plan on contributing something that has anything to do with this league?

Nope, not mad or envious whatsoever. What bit of interest I had in the Big East left when WVU, Pitt and Syracuse left. The only schools left with any attraction to me is Louisville and maybe Cincy for geographic reasons. We already have series with Louisville. That league is just a shell of what it once was and that's why Louisville, UConn and the rest are begging to get out. Sorry if the truth hurts. I'd prefer staying in CUSA. That's just my opinion.
