+1

There's only one way for sure that you can tell what happens to someone in the afterlife and I'm not ready to go snooping around that.

If he wasn't overbearing then neither was Jerry Falwell...

Edit: I just read the comment a few after the one you wrote that I commented on that mentions Falwell....funny.

This is where both camps say something along the lines of, "No, cause my guy was right!" Both men were abrasive. You'll have to decide for yourself which one had ideas that will be worth revisiting down the road.

I'm a fan of Hitchens' work. He believed that intellectual honesty requires bravery. No matter where you stand on his writings, you have to agree with that sentiment.

It still floors me whenever people refer to Falwell as "Dr. Falwell" ... his "doctorates" were honorary from schools similar to his own joke of an institution, Liberty.

Hmmmm, I get stuff in the mail for Liberty University. So Falwell is a bad comparison.

Well, yeah... that's what Christians believe. If you're an atheist, what do you care?

I certainly don't care. Reb's the one with his panties in a bunch over the lack of "live and let live" from atheists -- I figured the Christians are probably really pissing him off too.

It doesn't matter. However, it is telling when christians take glee in the thought of someone being tortured for all eternity. Kinda makes the man's point.

Why? I didn't do it, but whoever said we were perfect?

Is it glee, or is it merely confidence/satisfaction. From a Christian's perspective, it is the ultimate proof.

proof of what?

Assume for a moment that Christians are right and this guy was wrong, because I said, from a Christian's perspective. He now knows he was wrong and they were right. All the arguing before is immaterial because the truth is now known to him.

Christians and many other religions (reincarnation/past lives) would disagree with you, and none of us can PROVE it. You're certainly entitled to that opinion.

well, that is true, because you don't have the right to not be inconvenienced by people... but my point was that atheists are the "anti-sellers" of the ad world. They don't generally advertise because that would require a belief system. It's an unrealistic comparison.

How is any of this any different than "Vote Obama"? If you don't believe in sin or the bible or Jesus, what difference does it make whether someone's opinion is based in politics or religion??

I won't get into a quantitative debate, but certainly you'd agree that public displays of religion, whether they be nativity scenes on the square or references to God in a valedectorians speech are much less common today than just a few years ago, much less a generation or more. You can hang a picture of Santa Claus, but not Jesus in your school.... all because my expression of my beliefs somehow limits your ability to ignore them?

I'm a big believer in individual freedoms, including the freedom to ignore those things you don't agree with or believe in. With that comes the responsibility of doing that as well. What I mean is, if i wish you a merry Christmas, that is a wish of good will that I believe in. If YOU do it, assuming you are an atheist, you MAY just be playing devil's advocate) it REALLY isn't much of a wish is it? I get that it is nice to wish someone a happy "something THEY believe in" day, but we don't do that. We wish a happy generic day to be non-offensive. Really? I find that MORE offensive. If you don't believe in Jesus, then fine. Wish me a happy holiday because that is what it is to you. You're wishing me a good day. Would you take it as an insult if I wished you a Merry Christmas? That's what it is to me. Why can't i wish YOU a good day?

Don't get me wrong. People who force their belief system on others are wrong in my view... even if I believe in that system... I just don't think my children should be stopped from drawing a picture of Jesus at school to celebrate "the season" because it might offend other children.

The irony here is that when atheists wish you a happy "Holiday" what that really means is happy "Holy Day"...holy day is the root of the word holiday. I guess they'll have to dream up some other nonsensical word to express their feelings of not celebrating the birth of Jesus.03-lmfao

Interesting side note, Peter Hitchens, Christopher's brother is a recovering Atheist and even wrote a book on the "war" on Christianity.
