Soccer Dispatches Wisconsin-Green Bay, 4-2, in Nike Tourney Finale
Orand scores first two career goals, then adds second-ever career assist.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's soccer team's perseverance paid off Sunday with a deluge of goals early that led to a a 4-2 decision over Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Nike Tournament at Oregon State University's Paul Lorenz Field.
The win gave the Ducks (1-4-1) their first win of the season against a brutally-tough opening schedule that has featured top-25 opponents already in three of their first six matches, and another top-10 preseason exhibition opponent.
"We've had several strong showings this year, but we're pleased to finally get a win to go with it," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "The scores haven't been indicative of our play, and the team can build some confidence and momentum off this. We showed we weren't afraid to go after them early with several chances right away, and continued that level the rest of the way. Of course the schedule gets tougher in a hurry so continuing to peak towards the conference season is important, and today's another step in the right direction."
Leading the scoring barrage, senior Amanda Orand capitalized off a late and unexpected starting call and tallied three shots, her first two career goals, and second career assist in the opening 15 minutes. Her two goals and five points just missed the Oregon records of three and six, held by current undergraduate assistant coach Chalise Baysa.
Orand's and the team's first score came at 10:24 unassisted from seven yards away and rebounded off both goal posts before finding the back of the net. Less than two minutes later at 12:59, Orand passed from 30 yards out right-center midfield, and fed sophomore Kelly Baird who scored from the right side to the left post, 15 yards out. Orand then connected again on a Cristan Higa assisted fastbreak on the left side wide, poking the ball along the ground around a charging keeper from 8 yards out.
'I didn't know I would start until right before the game when Sarah (Denner) ran to the bathroom," Orand said. "That actually made it easier since there wasn't any time to put pressure on myself. The first goal surprised me a little, because I didn't think I could catch up to the pass, so when I got to it I swung it back a little then hit it softly towards the post. It seemed pretty slow, just watching it roll past the keeper and off the post.
The Salem, Ore., native Orand almost added a third goal on her fourth and final shot in the 79th minute. Eight yards out from the Phoenix goal, left center, she side-footed a chip just over the keeper, but unfortunately also above the cross bar for a would-be hat trick.
"I wish I had that last one back," Orand said, "because I should have had it - I just tipped it a little too high. I haven't had a hat trick since high school so that would have been neat. But that's not as important as the team getting get four goals and have our hard work paid off. As a senior we've tried to keep the team as motivated as possible (through the recent games), especially Sarah (Peters), Lindsey (Peterson) and Robi (Thayer) who do a great vocally on the field."
Orand's previous lone career point came off an assist for the Ducks last year in a 5-2 win at San Jose State. Sunday's stats were even more special since it was the second start of the season, and only third of her career in an Oregon-Hawaii shared career, with her first start for the Rainbows back in in 1999.
Later in the second period, with the Ducks continuing to rotate their entire 24-person active roster onto the field, freshman Caitlin Gamble became the second freshman to score for the Ducks this season with the team's final goal at 62:32, thanks to an assist by freshman Jessica Fetzer. The Salt Lake City native sailed a 25-yarder from the left central midfielder to the top of the left side of the net after two missed chances earlier Sunday.
Team-wise, the Ducks dominated the tempo and finished with sizable advantages in shots (28-8), shots on goal (16-6), and corner kicks (6-1), with the Phoenix up only on goalkeeper saves (12-4).
More importantly, the offensive storm put an end to a dry spell that saw the Ducks get shutout in three of their first five matches, and tallying single goals in the two others.
In net for the Ducks, starting goalkeeper Sarah Peters blanked the Phoenix for the first 58:00 of the game before redshirt junior Mary Etter saw her first action on the pitch for the Ducks, and played the remaining 32:00. Etter came up with one save and allowed two goals in her first collegiate action, although the second score wasn't entirely her fault when an Oregon player was whistled for a foul as a Wisconsin-GB player streaked ahead inside the box towards the goal. On the ensuing penalty kick, Etter guessed correctly in her dive, but the kick was blasted out of her diving grasp, low and just inside the left corner of the goal.
The Everett, Wash., native Etter, a two-time All-America discus thrower for the Ducks on the track (eighth in `00 and `02), walked-on the soccer team barely two months ago and saw her first soccer action since starring as a soccer team MVP and three-year letterwinner for Snohomish High School, which won a state title her sophomore season in 1997. Oregon's normal second-string goalkeeper, sophomore Domenique Lainez, is out 4-5 weeks with a serious ankle sprain from early September.
Wisconsin-Green Bay (2-6-0) scored its first goal at 61:05 when Katie Uhalt put the goal in the left half of the net on an assist by Angie Bazatto.
In the afternoon Nike Tournament finale, host Oregon State (5-1-2) beat Pacific, 1-0, and handed the Tigers (7-1-0) their first loss of the season.
Looking ahead, the Ducks' remaining schedule only gets tougher with consensus No. 1 North Carolina, a program Steffen served as an assistant coach for three seasons (1993-95), visiting Pape' Field in Eugene, Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 pm.
