Here's the shocker of the year.
ASU to announce Gus Malzahn as the new head football coach tomorrow. 6 years at $750,000 per, with a 2 million dollar buyout. That's one I never expected. I think hes a class guy and hope he does well for the Red Wolves.04-cheers04-cheers

Talk about a program landing on its feet. I guess the whiners on their board are OK now?

Boy did they ever land on their feet. I still can't believe Gus would pass up the Vanderbilt job and take a job at ASU and go from making $1.3 million to $750,000 per year. But it does give him a chance to be a head coach at a D1 school, and if he's successful there, he'll have other bigger offers if he chooses to move on. I've never payed much attention to ASU football, but I will start watching them with more interest now because of Coach Malzahn. Shows what difference a coach can make in fan interest.

If all of this is true, Malzahn passing up on Vandy to take a job in his home State doesn't really shock me. Vandy is one really tough football coaching job, and usually a dead end. Remember what a coach who was quiting the job at Vandy said there once: "It's really hard to try to be like Harvard Monday through Friday, and then try to be like Alabama on Saturday."

Great Hire for the Red Wolves! Should help them capitalize on Coach Freeze's good foundation for running the spread

Excellent quote Peter.

It is actually nice to see there is someone in sports (other than Derek Fisher) who doesn't consider money to be "everything". But obviously there had to be some reason for his "madness". He was the "hot" assistant after last season. His stock obviously went way down after this season. Another down season at Auburn and his chances of getting a head coaching job would have been minimal.
