It can, but it won't. Big East is the established name, they won't want to change the name for basketball (given the conferences success), and they won't want two separate names for the sports (since they want the brand to grow).

The Big Ten is a silly name since it has more than ten schools.

The Big 12 is a silly name now that they have only ten schools.

The whole conference expansion thing is silly.

Additionally:

The Atlantic Coast Conference is a silly name since Pittsburgh is not in an Atlantic Coast State.

The South Eastern Conference is a silly name since it has Missouri is not a South Eastern State.

The Pacific 12 is a silly name since Arizona, Utah, and Colorado are not a Pacific Coast States.

I take more exception to the "Big" than the "East."

RE: Can the Big East change it's name?
Now you guys are just being.....silly. Get out of your kung-fu stance and relax.

1) Changing a number in a name is not that big of a deal because people understand that conference numbers change. (Thats why I think the Big East was wise not to include a number in its name)
2) The SEC has ONE school out side the geographic region. I agree, it shouldn't be in the SEC because it ain't southern but thats just me. And honestly, they sould just be the Southern Conference.
3) The ACC has ONE school not in a state along the east coast (by a matter of double digit miles).

The EAST in Big East is a declaration where the conference is located. Now your most powerful football school (once WV leaves) is now WEST of the Mississippi and given the BE's past decision making process, two-four future schools will be WEST of the Mississippi as well.
Whereas people chuckle when they hear that the Big 12 only has 10 members (and this can be rectified by adding two more members) , it is an outright laugh when you hear SDSU in the Big East. You can't "fix" the name like you can with other leagues unless you add "Big East of Hawaii" or something silly like that.
The name continues to make the conference look "clownish" with a team from the West Coast in the Big East. In all honesty, Big East should swap names with CUSA. Big East is now truely a conference that spans the USA and the CUSA is now more of an eastern confernce that the Big East.

That's a big stretch you're going for there. Pennsylvania is an East Coast state even if it doesn't directly touch the Atlantic. It comes awfully close considering the Delaware River that far north is still brackish.
