Syracuse gridder got report card ‘boost’ at LI high school

A legendary football coach at Long Island’s Bellport HS has been accused of successfully pressuring school officials to pump up a star player’s math grades so the teen would qualify for a full athletic scholarship to Syracuse University, The Post has learned.

The blockbuster charges of grade-fixing were leveled against then-head coach Joe Cipp Jr. — who was also the district’s superintendent at the time and remains in that position — and assistant Superintendent Nelson Briggs. The allegations are in a notice of intent to sue the district filed by former Bellport Principal Kevin O’Connell, who claims he was fired after refusing to fudge the student’s transcript.

You asked. Hardly the only guy from Bellport who ended up in jail but this was a guy who got out, became successful for a few years but then became another Bellport statistic-- even worse then the guys who never got out. Most don't think of poverty when they think of New York's Long Island (Hamptons etc) but Bellport (and a few other communities on LI) is dirt poor.

Well...one can insert hundreds of other towns/school districts, etc...because it happens all the time (grade fixing for athletes)...only surprising thing about this case is that it "allegedly" came from the School District Superintendent himself.

That does tend to put the spotlight on it, especially when that becomes public knowledge...

What's your obsession with Syracuse, Knithlight? The Bernie thread, and now this. This isn't even that big of a deal. It's not like he's an elite recruit, or that Marrone knew about it.

Knightlight is actually ok when it comes to the Cuse. I have seen him on multiple occassions where he has defended SU, even when other psuedo-great posters were tearing down the Cuse. He's pretty fair when it comes down to sharing info that he finds, except when it comes to UCF,lol.
