OSU Slips To Fourth At Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate
Jurgensen, Coakley and Kelley finish in the top eight.

Oct. 1, 2002

BRIGHTON, Colo. - -

The Oregon State men's golf squad shot a 9-over-par 297 in the final round of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate on Tuesday to finish fourth overall with a three-round score of 10-over 874 after starting the day in second at the par-72 Riverdale Dunes course.

Individually, Michael Jurgensen paced the Beavers with a 74 Tuesday for a three-round total of even-par 216 to tie for sixth. Jurgensen's three-round totals have been par or better in all three tournaments so far this year.

Joining Jurgensen in the top eight were freshmen Kenny Coakley and Brian Kelley, both of whom finished at 1-over 217 to tie for eighth. The tournament marked the fourth top-10 finish of Jurgensen's career and the first for Coakley and Kelley.

The tournament also marked the first time that OSU has placed three individuals in the top-10 since the Northwest Classic in September of 2001.

OSU finished six shots back of third-place Texas-El Paso and 19 behind tournament champion Denver. The Beavers edged fifth-place Nevada by three strokes.

"We got off to a slow start today and never got anything going," OSU coach Brian Watts said. "We just didn't make any putts all day. Our short game was very inconsistent, and that kept us from shooting the low numbers and perhaps from winning. Hats off to Denver though, they putted well and made the shots."

Chance Holmes and Daren Greig tied for 37th and 44th, respectively; Holmes totaled a 224 and Greig a 226.

UNC-Wilmington's Derek Brown captured medalist honors with his 8-under 208 thanks to 68s over the final two rounds.

In OSU's last two tournaments, the Beavers have placed third and fourth, giving OSU its highest back-to-back finishes since 1999, when it placed third at the Duck Invitational and second at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.

Two tournaments remain on OSU's fall schedule; the Beavers compete in California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 14-15 and play in the Nelson Invitational, hosted by Stanford, Oct. 25-27.

"We'll put in a lot of work on the short game and on the putting green before then," Watts said. "We've got two big tournaments coming up with two great fields before the fall season is over."
