STANFORD TAKES ON USC IN BATTLE OF CONFERENCE UNBEATEN: The No. 4 ranked Stanford Cardinal women's volleyball team (12-1, 3-0 Pac-10) will host No. 1 USC (10-0, 4-0 Pac-10) on Friday, October 4, at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. The match will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on FOX Sports Net. Check local listings to see time and date in your area. Jim Watson and Angie Simpson will provide the play-by-play and color analysis respectively. The Cardinal then take on No. 13 UCLA (9-5, 2-2 Pac-10) on Saturday, October 5 at 7 p.m. in Maples.

LAST WEEK: Stanford went 2-0 last week, picking up conference wins over Oregon State (3-0) and Oregon (3-0). The Cardinal hit .418 as a team, outblocking their opponents 4.33 to 1.17 for the weekend. Ogonna Nnamani and Sara McGee averaged a team-leading 3.67 kills per game while McGee and Jennifer Harvey chipped in 2.17 and 1.40 blocks per game respectively. Logan Tom led the team with 2.33 digs per game while Ashley Ivy had four service aces (0.67 sapg). The Cardinal improve to a perfect 33-0 all-time against the Beavers and 31-2 versus the Ducks.

ABOUT THE TROJANS: USC (10-0, 4-0 Pac-10) is currently ranked No. 1 nationally in both the USA Today/AVCA Coaches poll and Volleyball Magazine poll ... They re coached by Mick Haley ... The Trojans are the only remaining undefeated Pac-10 team ... Opposite Lauren Killian recorded a career-high 13 kills against WSU, in addition to hitting .455 and positing a team-best 15.0 total points on the night ... Against the Huskies she hit .333 with 11 kills off of 21 attacks ... She averaged a team-leading 4.0 kills and 4.5 points per game in the two wins ... Middle blockers Katie Olsovsky and Emily Adams both hit above .500 against Washington State ... Olsovsky tallied a .588 attack percentage (11-1-17) ... Adams hit .529 (10-1-17) ... Stanford holds a 43-12 advantage in the all-time series with USC ... Last year, the Cardinal defeated the Trojans, 3-1, in Maples.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: UCLA (9-5, 2-2 Pac-10) is currently ranked No. 13 in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches poll ... They are coached by Andy Banachowski ... Outside hitter Brittany Ringel led the Bruins with 29 kills in their sweep of the Washington schools last weekend ... She opened with a 12-kill performance against Washington, hitting .571 (12-0-21) in an error-free performance ... Libero Chrissie Zartman recorded a career-high 27 digs in UCLA's five-game win over Washington State on Saturday night ... In its win over Washington State, UCLA had six players record 10 or more kills in the match ... The Bruins lead the all-time series with Stanford, 34-25 ... Last year, the Cardinal beat UCLA, 3-0, at Maples.

TOM RANKS 28TH AMONG PAC-10 CAREER KILL LEADERS: Senior outside hitter and 2001 AVCA National Player of the Year Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT) has 1,505 career kills heading into this weekend's matches which ranks 28th all-time in the Pac-10. The 6-1 hitter needs just 23 kills to move up a spot into 27th. Tom is back in action after helping the U.S. National Team to a silver medal at the FIVB World Championships in Germany earlier this month. The three-time All-American ranked sixth in the world in total scoring and third in serving. Tom, the 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year, was named the NACWAA/State Farm Classic MVP earlier this season before she left for Germany. She is one of three Cardinal starters, to average over a block per game this season (1.21 bpg). Tom is leading the team, averaging 4.42 kills and 2.37 digs per game. She is third in blocks. The 2000 Olympian helped lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a fourth-place finish at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.

IVY CLOSES IN ON 100TH CAREER SERVICE ACE: Senior opposite hitter Ashley Ivy (Arlington, TX) notched four service aces over the weekend against the Oregon schools to bring her career total to 99. On the season, the Texas native leads the league and team with 36 aces (0.86 sapg). Ivy's season best in service aces is 46 (which she tallied last year) - she needs just 10 the rest of the season to match it. The 46 aces ranks tied for fourth all-time for a single season on The Farm. The 6-0 opposite has notched six service aces twice this season (vs. Cal Poly and Houston) to tie her career high. The six aces ties for fifth all-time at Stanford for a single match. Ivy is averaging 2.83 kills, 2.14 digs and 0.93 blocks per game this season. She has tallied double figures in kills this season on seven occasions and has two double-doubles on the year.

"O" MY!: All-American Ogonna Nnamani (Normal, IL) averaged 3.67 kills and 1.17 blocks against the Oregon schools last weekend while hitting at a .349 clip. She tied her career high with five blocks against Oregon State on Friday night. This week, she finds herself ranked fifth in the conference in kills per game (4.07 kpg) and eighth in points per game (4.62). The 6-1 sophomore is averaging 3.56 kills and 1.33 blocks in conference matches this year. Nnamani, has earned all-tournament honors three times in 2002 - the NACWAA/State Farm Classic, the Stanford Invitational and the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational. She has notched double figures in kills in 10 of 12 matches in 2002 and has four double-doubles on the year.

McGEE LEADS CONFERENCE IN HITTING PERCENTAGE AND BLOCKS: Junior middle blocker Sara McGee (Davis, CA) is currently leading the league and team with her .486 hitting percentage (135-28-220) and 1.52 blocks per game. McGee has tallied double figures in kills on eight occasions in 2002 and has notched six or more blocks five times. She tallied 22 kills in six games vs. the Oregon schools, averaging 3.67 kpg while hitting at a stellar .690 clip, committing only two hitting errors on the weekend. McGee also led the Cardinal with 13 blocks (2.17 bpg). The 6-3 middle blocker is hitting .610 in conference matches this year. Her 3.21 kills per game ranks third on the squad as well. She made her presence known as she patrolled the middle in the State Farm Classic as she averaged 3.43 kills and 2.29 blocks en route to being named to the all-tournament team. She was also named to the Stanford Invitational all-tourney team this season.

DID YOU KNOW? The Cardinal are hitting a league-leading .326 while holding opponents to a conference-low .143 hitting percentage ... Stanford has won 26 consecutive home matches dating back to last season and have won 45 of the last 48 matches ... The nine points by Oregon in the Cardinal's 30-9 game two win is the lowest point total by a Stanford opponent since rally scoring was introduced last year (previous low was 11 by Washington) ... After hitting for .418 in the wins over the Oregon schools, the Cardinal have hit .333 or better in each of its last six matches ... Stanford has won its last 12 conference matches ... For her career, Logan Tom is averaging 5.03 kills per game (1,505 kills in 299 games) - this ranks her second all-time in the Pac-10 for highest kills average ... Stanford has amassed an amazing 670-169-4 all-time record since 1976 (.795 winning percentage), and has finished in the top 10 nationally in 20 of the last 21 seasons ... Stanford has lost five or more matches in a season just once in the last 10 years, and is 234-29 (.889) in the last seven years alone ... Stanford has reached the Final Four 13 times in the last 21 seasons, and produced 42 All-American honors in the last 20 years.

MAJOR RULE CHANGE FOR 2002 COLLEGIATE SEASON: The face of collegiate volleyball will see some changes this season as the libero position is introduced. The libero is a designated back-row player, intended to be used as a ball-control specialist. The libero is allowed to replace any player in the back row without counting as a substitution. There is no limit to the number of libero replacements a team is allowed. The pronunciation is "LEE-bah-ro".

CARDINAL HEAD COACH JOHN DUNNING: Second-year head coach John Dunning made his first year on The Farm a memorable one. He was tabbed AVCA National Coach of the Year after guiding the Cardinal to its fifth NCAA National Championship in December. Dunning was also named Pacific Region Coach of the Year as well as the 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year. In his first year at the helm, he led the Cardinal to a 33-2 overall record and its ninth Pac-10 Championship. Dunning, who spent 16 seasons at Pacific, compiled an impressive 468-104 (.818) record during his tenure. He led the Tigers to two NCAA Championships, a NCAA runner-up finish, five Big West Conference titles and 16 consecutive NCAA postseason tournament bids. Dunning earned his bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and economics from San Diego State in 1973. He coached volleyball and taught at Fremont High School from 1973 to 1980, then moved on to Saratoga High School, working in the same capacity from 1980-83. He returned to Fremont High School in 1984.

ON THE RADIO: All of the Stanford women's volleyball matches will be broadcast on KZSU-FM radio (Stanford student radio station) as well as on the internet. Aaron Levine will handle the play-by-play and color commentary duties.

T.V. TIME: The Stanford women's volleyball team is scheduled to appear twice at home on FOX Sports Net during the 2002 season. Stanford's USC match on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. and the Cardinal's Thursday, Nov. 7 match against Arizona at 7 p.m. will be broadcast. Stanford will also appear on FOX on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Arizona State. All matches will be shown on a delayed basis by FOX Sports Net on Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. local time (check local listings).

STANFORD WINS FIFTH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2001: The Stanford women's volleyball team claimed its fifth national championship with a decisive 3-0 victory over then-No. 1 Long Beach State. AVCA 2001 National Player of the Year Logan Tom tallied a match-high 25 kills and 12 digs along with five blocks on her way to being named Final Four MVP. Freshman Ogonna Nnamani, junior Ashley Ivy and senior Robyn Lewis were named to the all-tournament team.

WELCOME BACK YAMASAKI: Senior Lindsey Yamasaki (Oregon City, OR) is back for a final season of volleyball after a three year absence. The two-sport athlete (volleyball/basketball), played both sports for only one season on The Farm, and elected to compete in basketball only for her remaining years. After completing her basketball eligibility in 2001-02, Yamasaki was drafted by WNBA's Miami Sol and spent the summer with the team. Currently, the 6-2 outside hitter is averaging 2.83 kills and 1.61 digs per game. She was a 1999 All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection as well as a Pac-10 All-Freshman pick. A starter as a freshman in '99, Yamasaki averaged 2.54 kills and 2.04 digs per game for Stanford.

HARVEY PROVIDES CARDINAL WITH ONE-TWO PUNCH IN THE MIDDLE: Junior middle blocker Jennifer Harvey (Denver, CO) along with teammate Sara McGee provid e the Cardinal with the top blocking tandem in the conference. The 6-5 Harvey ranks second in the league to teammate McGee in blocks per game with 1.32. As a team, Stanford leads the league in blocking (3.56 bpg). Harvey also checks in seventh in hitting percentage at .360 (59-14-125). Her 44 block assists ranks second on the squad. Last weekend, she notched a match-high seven blocks in Stanford's 3-0 win over Oregon.

STANFORD PICKED TO WIN CONFERENCE TITLE IN PRESEASON POLL: Stanford, which won its ninth Pac-10 Conference volleyball title last season on the way to a fifth NCAA Championship, was picked to defend the Conference crown by the Pac-10 volleyball coaches. The Cardinal, who received 88 total votes, edged out second place USC by four votes. In addition, Stanford received seven of 10 first-place votes. Arizona finished third with 73 votes, followed by UCLA with 65 tallies. Washington State held the fifth place spot with 55 votes. Rounding out the poll was Oregon State, Arizona State, California, Washington and Oregon, respectively. The coaches have correctly picked the Pac-10 Champion in eight of the previous 13 polls.

UP NEXT: Stanford will travel to face No. 24 Arizona State on Thursday, October 10 at 7 p.m in Tempe, Ariz. The match will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on FOX Sports Net. The Cardinal will then take on Arizona on October 11 at 7 p.m. in Tucson, Ariz.

No. 1 USC Defeats No. 4 Stanford In Five Games

Stanford, Calif. - Cardinal senior Logan Tom had a match-high 29 kills as the No. 4 Stanford women's volleyball team fell to No. 1 USC, 3-2, tonight in Maples Pavilion before a crowd of 3,937. Game scores were 30-23, 27-30, 30-28, 25-30, 22-24.

Stanford falls to 12-2 overall, 3-1 in the Pac-10 while the Trojans improve to 11-0, 5-0 in league play.

The loss snapped a 26 consecutive match winning streak at Maples Pavilion for the Cardinal.

Both teams had seven match points each in game five before the Trojans finally ended the game on a block.

Ogonna Nnamani chipped in 15 kills and a career-high eight blocks on the night while teammate Ashley Ivy added 14 kills and 15 digs to the effort. Tom had a team and season-high 20 digs on the night. Setter Anna Robinson also notched a career high with 62 assists. Libero Courtney Schultz had a career-high 17 digs as well.

USC was led by April Ross' 19 kills and libero Nicole Davis' match-high 24 digs. Keao Burdine chipped in 18 kills and 14 digs on the evening.

For the match, Stanford outhit Southern California .305 to .218 and outblocked the Trojans 19 to 12.

The Cardinal is next in action tomorrow night against No. 13 UCLA at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.

Stanford, Calif. - Junior middle blocker Jennifer Harvey tallied a career-high 12 blocks as the No. 4 ranked Stanford women's volleyball team defeated No. 13 UCLA, 3-1, tonight in Maples Pavilion before a crowd of 2,750. Game scores were 30-24, 25-30, 30-25, 30-22.

The Cardinal improve to 13-2 on the year, 4-1 in the Pac-10 while the Bruins fall to 10-6, 3-3 in league play.

Stanford staked a 9-2 lead in game one as UCLA called a timeout after an Ashley Ivy/Jennifer Harvey block. The Cardinal continued to roll forcing a second Bruin timeout at 18-8 on an Anna Robinson dump. UCLA closed the gap to 17-24 on a Cardinal blocking error but Stanford proved to be too much winning 30-24 on an Ogonna Nnamani kill.

The Bruins took the early 9-5 lead in game two but led by just one (15-14) at the media timeout. The Cardinal took their first timeout trailing 30-23 and the second at 22-26. UCLA continued to push on reaching game point on a Stanford hitting error at 29-25. They would win game two 30-25.

UCLA led game three 15-13 at the first media timeout but the Cardinal came back to take the led at 16-15 on an Ivy kill. The two teams traded points and found themselves tied at 21-all. Stanford inched ahead taking the 25-23 lead on a block by Harvey and Nnamani. They reached game and match point on a kill by Nnamani. The Cardinal won game three 30-25 on an Ivy service ace. The ace was the 100th career service ace of Ivy's career.

Stanford took the early 11-6 lead, forcing a Bruins timeout after a UCLA hitting error. The Cardinal continued to widen the gap going up 21-14 on a Nnamani kill. The Bruins closed the gap to 18-24 on a service ace forcing a Stanford timeout. With the Cardinal leading 26-22, Stanford scored the last four consecutive points to close out the match, 30-22 on a Bruins hitting error.

Four Cardinal players were in double figures for the match. Ogonna Nnamani had a match-high 17 kills and added five blocks on the night. Logan Tom tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Ashley Ivy had 13 kills, 15 digs and six blocks on the night while teammate Sara McGee notched 11 kills. Setter Anna Robinson added 51 assists and Lindsey Yamasaki had 12 digs as well.

The Bruins were led by Brittany Ringel's 15 kills. Lauren Fendrik added 14 kills and a match-high 19 digs. Heather Cullen had 10 kills and 12 digs on the night for UCLA.

Stanford is back in action next weekend as they travel to Arizona State and Arizona in continued conference action.
