Donnie Jones did not spy on recruits!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/col...story.html

This story started by Thamel and Forde, stated that among other things, Donnie Jones listened in on player phone calls while a runner talked to the recruit. We all know who the runners are claimed to be. Kevin Ware dropped his UCF commitment after Thamel (or Forde ) contacted Kevin Wares parents. Mrs. Ware came out and said she was disgusted with the actions of Donnie Jones. Funny thing happened during this NCAA investigation; Donnie Jones was proven to have never spied on recruits! So what happens to Thamel for telling the Ware family lies? Oh, and for that whole runner issue, it’s funny that the one player that had direct connections to the runner will be playing at UCF after paying back $900. So if Rompza isn't kicked out and Donnie Jones is still the coach, how bad were the violations really?

I'm not a reporter so any inaccuracies in this story please post changes. Also this isn't meant to be a smack thread with Louisville.

RE: Thamel and Forte proven wrong about UCF!
Maybe it's just me but I find the thread title misleading. I have no connection to Forde and Thamel so I don't feel the need to defend them, other than I found it hilarious when UCF fans declared them mouthpieces of UofL.

So the two writers weren't 100% correct on suspected allegations I presume? UCF is still going on probation, your basketball coach is suspended from the beginning of conference play, and the player has to pay back $900 and miss a 1/3 of the season. Were the writers wrong on improprieties at UCF, or are we just celebrating that they were only 90% accurate?

RE: Donnie Jones did not spy on recruits!
CollegeCard,
The biggest charge was that Donnie Jones spied on Ware's phone calls with runners. He did not. 90%, more like 40%, but our AD was the culprit not D Jones as it was reported. We lost a top recruit and the #16 recruiting class because of that one charge. That is not what I would call a minor point!

But again, the charges at UCF are no where near as serious as what they were first reported to be.

Sure. Just don't expect much sympathy for losing a recruiting class when your AD was cheating.

Our AD offered instate tuition to an out of state player. The player never came to UCF. I'd hardly call that cheating compared to other programs uh uhm..Cam Newton..lol

I don't want sympathy, I just want the truth out. I never said Forde or Thamel are the mouth pieces of louisville. In fact, I wish Louisville and Ware all the best. I can't wait until you come to Orlando.

He didn't make it last year. He committed to UCF again this year. UCF should be good at the Center position with last years #4 and this years #19 coming.

Eligibility issues. Which is disappointing. It's a shame we live in a world where you are either a successful athletic team OR an academic. Not both.

Chandler has talent, it's a matter of getting his head straight, which has always been a problem with him.

Can we have Ware back?03-hissyfit
How many four or five star players does Louisville have? You don't need him.04-cheers

RE: Donnie Jones did not spy on recruits!
UCF fans blasted Thamel and Forde saying they had no credibility....yet the NCAA proved differently. Secondly, just b/c the NCAA could not prove that Jones illegally listened in on a telephone conversation doesn't mean it didn't happen.

The bottom line is that UCF has now been busted twice in three years. So if you think that firing your AD fixes the systemic problem at UCF in terms of compliance you are really being naive. Old school control freaks like O'Leary know everything that is going on their program...so for the UCF fans to suggest that he had no clue is absurd. Again, its what you can prove...and OLeary has been slick enough to let his assistants and lackeys take the blame. Hopefully UCF has learned their lesson since you guys will likely be joining the Big East.

1. USF has no place being uppity about Athletic Association ethics, only a few years removed of Jim Leavitt.

2. Keith Tribble was the source of both "systematic problems", which include inappropriate recruiting text messages in the first case, and knowledge of runners in the second.

3. Firing the AD is not the only measure taken. The UCFAA is being reorganized with the entire association answering to Ethics, which answers to President Hitt. We currently have ex-admiral Al Harms as interm AD.

4. You give O'Leary too much credit if he is capable of keeping his fingers clean of this WHILE being Head Coach, when everyone expects him to know everything going on under him anyway.

5. (my weakest point) It was said earlier that "Just because you can't prove that Donnie Jones didn't listen in on conversations, doesn't mean he didn't do it". If that logic applies, and considering we are still in our own investigation period (which we have to turn in our results at the end of the 90 day period), just because these ALLEGATIONS have surfaced doesn't mean they are true. Are they? Likely, if not in their entirety, but it is yet to be set in stone as to what is and is not true.

Don't jump the gun to ride your high horse when nothing is finished yet. You only risk making yourself looking a fool, for a very marginal gain.

Just using the same logic used by UCF fans over the last 15 years when it considered itself holier than thou and took gret delight in the troubles of other programs. Obviously karma has caught up with UCF. Do I need to link posts from UCF fans bad mouthing USF for its "win at all costs mentality"? It's actually quite telling that UCF still doesn't get it as Oleary still has a job.

Bottom line: UCF has been busted twice in less than three years by the NCAA. Sorry but you cannot spin the facts.

It's not up to the fans to kick O'Leary out. If you did a bit of research you would find that the majority of UCF fans want O'Leary OUT. (Orlando Sentinel recent poll)

The bottom line is, if we were to fire him now, it would devastate our program, having to find an AD and a new head coach. But I'm sure that doesn't matter coming from an untouchable, omniscient fan such as yourself. He's gotta be fired because it looks like it his fault, proof be damned! (Speaking of which, that very same NCAA investigation you use to slight us, cleared O'Leary of any association with the recruiting violations. So which is which?)

From a performance standpoint, he's only one year removed from an 11-3 season with a win over Georgia, which doesn't justify firing after a down season.

Question: In response to the "holier than thou" mentality that has apparently lasted for the past 15 years (random number apparently, I don't recall any kind of rivalry / hate that we feel for each other now from any time before USF joined the Big East 7 years ago.), have you never used the rebuttal "4-0, 64-12"? I feel that every USF fans whips out that e-peen everytime they get into any kind of pissing contest with UCF. It'd be kinda hypocritical to call us "holier than thou", standing on such a shaky foundation.

UCF has not been busted twice. This is another myth. UCF compliance office discovered a coach broke an NCAA rule. UCF took action and then SELF-REPORTED the problem to the NCAA. I'd hardly call the problem systemic when UCF notifies the NCAA.
